Island Beach Dress by Janine Myska

What is Being Made

The Island Beach Dress is a beginner-friendly crochet garment designed as a lightweight, wearable piece perfect for warm weather. This dress features a finished length of 28 inches and is available in six sizes ranging from Small through 3X, making it an inclusive design suitable for various body types. The garment is worked in a structured construction method that builds the piece systematically from the foundation chain upward.

Crochet Techniques Used

This pattern employs fundamental crochet techniques appropriate for beginners while creating a polished finished garment. The dress is constructed using basic row-by-row building methods, with the garment worked in a side-to-side or structured approach as indicated in the pattern notes. The construction method allows crafters to develop foundational skills while completing a wearable item.

Crochet Stitches

The Island Beach Dress utilizes essential crochet stitches that form the foundation of most crochet projects:

  • Chain (ch) – creates the foundation and beginning of rows
  • Single Crochet (sc) – a basic, tight stitch providing structure
  • Double Crochet (dc) – a taller stitch that creates drape and movement
  • Treble Crochet (tr) – an even taller stitch for lighter, more open fabric areas
  • Slip Stitch (sl st) – used for joining rounds and finishing edges

The pattern also incorporates spaces created between stitches, which add openness and breathability to the fabric—ideal for a beach dress construction.

Materials Required

The Island Beach Dress is crafted using 100% cotton yarn in worsted weight (medium #4), which is ideal for warm-weather garments due to its breathability and natural fiber properties. The specific yarn recommended is Lion Brand 24/7 Cotton in White. Yardage requirements vary by size:

  • Size S: 452 yards (414 meters) – 3 skeins
  • Size M: 523 yards (479 meters) – 3 skeins
  • Size L: 568 yards (520 meters) – 4 skeins
  • Size XL: 627 yards (574 meters) – 4 skeins
  • Size 2X: 695 yards (636 meters) – 4 skeins
  • Size 3X: 763 yards (697 meters) – 5 skeins

Crafters may substitute any similar 100% cotton yarn in worsted weight if the exact Lion Brand yarn is unavailable. A Size H/8 (5mm) crochet hook is used throughout the project, along with a needle for weaving in ends and scissors for finishing.

Pattern Details and Difficulty

Rated as a beginner-level pattern, the Island Beach Dress is accessible to those new to crochet while producing a professional-looking finished garment. The pattern uses US crochet terminology and includes clear abbreviations for all stitches. An important pattern note indicates that the beginning chain does not count as a stitch, meaning crocheters should begin each row directly into the first stitch rather than treating the chain as a working stitch. This approach simplifies stitch counting and helps beginners maintain consistent stitch counts throughout their work.

This original pattern is the work of Janine Myska and Knits 'N Knots, created in 2019. The downloadable PDF format allows crafters to access the complete instructions and work at their own pace.
