Product Description

I regularly watch the “Round the Twist” knitting video podcast by Carin Boelman. Things got very interesting when she started talking about a new guy she was dating that she thought was a “keeper”; and things got very amusing when she introduced him to the Firefly television series and he requested an earflap hat like the one the series character Jayne Cobb received from his mother – a red, orange and yellow monstrosity with a massive pompom of those colours to top it all off.

Carin eventually announced her engagement to this “keeper”, and began discussing wedding plans! In episode 138, she revealed that she’d love to have mini amigurumi cupcakes as decorations for all the tables or favours for guests. But (to her credit), she realised that she didn’t really have the time to do them all herself, so if any of her viewers would like to help out by knitting cupcakes, she would love that.

So I made something up, and this pattern is the result. Enjoy!

Jayne Cupcake Knitted Toy Pattern

What Is Being Made

The Jayne Cupcake is a knitted amigurumi-style decorative toy cupcake designed by Kathleen Sperling. This pattern creates small, three-dimensional cupcake figures suitable for table decorations or party favors. The design was created as a collaborative community project inspired by the "Round the Twist" knitting video podcast, where viewers were invited to knit miniature cupcakes for a special occasion.

Project Type and Craft Technique

Primary Craft: Knitting

This is an intermediate-level knitting project that employs amigurumi construction techniques. Amigurumi is the Japanese art of creating small, stuffed knitted or crocheted toys and decorative objects. The pattern uses traditional knitting methods to build three-dimensional forms that are subsequently stuffed to create dimensional cupcake shapes.

Stitches and Construction Methods

While specific stitch-by-stitch details are not fully outlined in the available pattern excerpt, amigurumi knitting typically incorporates fundamental knitting stitches worked in the round to create seamless, tubular forms. The intermediate difficulty rating suggests the pattern includes techniques beyond basic knit and purl stitches, likely involving increases, decreases, and shaping methods necessary to form the cupcake base and frosting elements.

Materials Required

  • Yarn Weight: 4-ply yarn (also known as sport or DK weight), providing appropriate thickness for detailed amigurumi work
  • Needles: Knitting needles appropriate for 4-ply yarn
  • Additional Materials: Fiberfill or polyester stuffing for filling the completed cupcake forms

Pattern Details

This is a free, downloadable PDF pattern created by independent designer Kathleen Sperling, copyrighted in 2012. The pattern represents a community-inspired design project born from the knitting podcast community, making it an accessible resource for knitters interested in creating decorative amigurumi toys.
