Product Description
These simple mitts are knit in the round from the bottom up and feature a traditional thumb gusset.
The mitts will stretch to accommodate a variety of hand sizes. But if needed, the pattern is easily adjustable for larger or smaller hands simply by adjusting the yarn weight and needles. For a smaller size, change to a sport weight yarn and a size 4 (3.5 mm needle); for larger, knit mitts in a light worsted yarn on a size 6 (4 mm) needle.
This pattern has been test knit and tech edited.
Les Cheneaux Mitts by Sierra Morningstar
Project Overview
Les Cheneaux is a downloadable knitting pattern for elegant mitts inspired by the natural geography of Michigan's Upper Peninsula. The design references Les Cheneaux, The Channels—a series of 36 islands woven through the waters of Lake Huron—translating this imagery into a knitted textile through cable and ribbing patterns. These mitts are ideal for knitters seeking an intermediate-level project that combines classic construction techniques with refined stitch work.
What Is Being Made
The pattern produces a pair of mitts with a finished circumference of 6.5 inches (16.5 cm) when unstretched and a length of 7.5 inches (18.5 cm). The mitts are designed to stretch and accommodate a variety of hand sizes, making them versatile for different wearers. The pattern includes adjustability guidance for custom sizing by modifying yarn weight and needle size.
Construction Techniques
- Knit in the round from the bottom up, a seamless construction method that creates a continuous tube
- Traditional thumb gusset integration for comfortable thumb placement and movement
- Cable and ribbing pattern combination that creates visual interest while maintaining structural integrity
Stitches and Stitch Patterns
The Les Cheneaux Mitts feature a series of elegant cables that weave through a background of simple ribbing. This contrast between textured cable stitches and smooth ribbed sections creates depth and visual movement reminiscent of water flowing through channels. The cable motif serves both aesthetic and functional purposes, adding elasticity and structure to the mitts.
Yarn and Materials
The pattern calls for 140 yards (128 meters) of DK weight yarn, a lightweight yarn suitable for detailed stitch definition. The standard pattern uses DK weight with appropriate needles for this yarn category. For customization, the pattern is easily adjustable: knitters can substitute sport weight yarn with size 4 (3.5 mm) needles for a smaller size, or light worsted weight yarn with size 6 (4 mm) needles for a larger size. This flexibility allows the same pattern to work across multiple yarn weights and hand sizes.
Difficulty Level
Rated as intermediate, this pattern is suitable for knitters with foundational skills in circular knitting, cable stitches, and thumb gusset construction. The combination of techniques—working in the round, managing cable patterns, and executing a traditional thumb gusset—requires moderate experience but remains accessible to dedicated knitters building their skill set.
Design Recognition
The Les Cheneaux Mitts pattern received support through the Eat.Sleep.Knit. Pattern Academy Design Fellowship, a recognition of its design quality and contribution to the knitting community.
