Lime Berry Cardigan by Coffee & Crocheting
Project Overview
The Lime Berry Cardigan is a beginner-friendly crochet cardigan designed by Coffee & Crocheting and available as a downloadable PDF pattern. This garment is worked in one piece from the top down using a raglan construction method, making it an efficient and seamless approach to cardigan creation. The sleeves are crocheted in the round and worked directly onto the body piece, eliminating the need for separate assembly. The pattern is available in five sizes: XS, S, M, L, and XL, allowing for a customizable fit across multiple body types.
Construction Technique
The Lime Berry Cardigan employs a top-down raglan construction, a popular technique in crochet garment design that offers several advantages. By working from the top down, crafters can easily try on the garment as it progresses and adjust the length to their preference before fastening off. The raglan shaping creates diagonal increases that form the characteristic sloped shoulder seams, resulting in a comfortable and flattering fit. Since the sleeves are worked in the round directly onto the body, there is minimal seaming required, which reduces finishing time and creates a more professional appearance.
Stitches and Techniques
This pattern is primarily constructed using double crochet (DC) stitches, a fundamental crochet stitch that creates a fabric with good drape and structure. The pattern instructions note that chains do not count as stitches, which is important for maintaining accurate stitch counts throughout the project. Stitch counts for each size are provided in parentheses throughout the pattern guide, allowing crafters to verify their progress and ensure proper sizing. The use of stitch markers or similar tools is recommended to help track pattern repeats and raglan increases.
Materials and Yarn Specifications
The Lime Berry Cardigan is designed to be worked with lace-weight or sport-weight yarn held at double strands. The pattern recommends using two strands of Mohair Royal from Lana Gatto or comparable lace-weight, 2-ply yarn with a yardage of approximately 35 wraps per inch (wpi). Working with two strands of delicate yarn creates a lightweight, airy fabric with beautiful drape, making this cardigan suitable for layering or warm-weather wear. Yarn requirements vary by size and are detailed in the size guide included with the pattern.
Gauge and Hook Size
Achieving proper gauge is essential for this pattern to produce the correct finished size. The recommended gauge is 9 rows and 16.5 double crochet stitches over a 10 centimeter (4 inch) square. The pattern specifies that the 10 cm mark should fall in the middle of the 17th double crochet stitch when measuring across. A 3.5 mm (size E-4) crochet hook is recommended for achieving this gauge with the specified yarn weight. Crafters should take time to crochet a gauge swatch in both rows and across before beginning the project, as proper gauge is critical for achieving the intended finished measurements.
Additional Supplies
Beyond yarn and a crochet hook, the Lime Berry Cardigan pattern requires a tapestry needle for weaving in ends after completion. Stitch markers or similar notions are essential for tracking increases and pattern sections throughout the construction process. These basic finishing tools are standard supplies for most crochet projects and help ensure a polished final result.
Difficulty Level
The Lime Berry Cardigan is classified as a beginner-level pattern, making it an excellent choice for crafters new to garment construction. Despite its beginner designation, the pattern introduces important skills such as top-down construction, raglan shaping, and working in the round. The straightforward use of double crochet stitches and clear stitch counting makes this project accessible while still providing valuable learning opportunities for developing crocheters.
