Little Crab Amigurumi Toy

What You're Making

The Little Crab is a beginner-friendly amigurumi toy designed by CrochetFox. This small crocheted crab features a rounded body, four articulated arms, and four legs, finished with plastic eyes for an expressive face. Amigurumi is the Japanese craft of creating small, stuffed crocheted or knitted toys and figurines, perfect for gifts, decorations, or as a first project for those learning to crochet.

Crochet Techniques Used

This project employs fundamental amigurumi construction techniques suitable for beginners. The pattern uses the magic ring method to start pieces in the round, creating a tight center with no visible hole. Increases and decreases are strategically placed to shape the three-dimensional form of the crab's body and limbs. The toy is worked in continuous rounds rather than joining at the end of each round, which is standard for amigurumi construction.

Stitches and Stitch Abbreviations

  • sc (single crochet): The foundation stitch used throughout the pattern, creating a tight, dense fabric ideal for stuffed toys
  • sc2tog (single crochet 2 together): A decrease stitch that reduces stitch count by combining two stitches into one, used to shape and close the pieces
  • Magic ring: A technique for starting projects in the round without a visible center hole, used to begin the body, legs, and arms

Pattern Structure and Components

The Little Crab is constructed from four separate pieces that are assembled together:

  • Body: Created over 10 rounds using the magic ring start. Rounds 1-5 use strategic increases to expand the sphere, with Round 1 starting at 6 single crochets. Rounds 6-10 decrease the stitches to close the opening, allowing the piece to be stuffed and sealed.
  • Legs: Four identical pieces made from a magic ring of 6 single crochets, worked for 3 rounds total. These short cylinders attach to the body to create the crab's walking legs.
  • Arms: Two sets of arms with different construction methods. The first pair is made by creating two separate pieces (one worked for 3 rounds, one for 2 rounds) that are then joined together and worked for 2 additional rounds to create a larger, more articulated limb. The second pair follows the same method. This technique creates arms with more dimension and movement potential.

Materials Required

The Little Crab pattern calls for specific materials to complete the toy:

  • Yarn: Red yarn in an appropriate weight for a 3 mm hook (typically worsted weight or similar)
  • Hook: 3 mm crochet hook, which creates a tight gauge suitable for amigurumi
  • Fiberfill: Polyester fiberfill stuffing to fill the body and limbs, creating a soft, squishy toy
  • Plastic eyes: Black plastic eyes for attachment to the finished head, giving the crab character and expression
  • Yarn needle: A tapestry or yarn needle for weaving in ends and sewing the assembled pieces together

Assembly and Finishing

After all pieces are crocheted and stuffed, assembly is straightforward. The four legs and four arms are sewn onto the body using the yarn tails left for this purpose. Finally, the black plastic eyes are attached to the front of the body to complete the crab's face. Weaving in ends throughout the process ensures a polished, finished appearance.

Skill Level

Rated as a beginner project, the Little Crab introduces fundamental amigurumi techniques without overwhelming complexity. The pattern uses only single crochet and decreases, making it accessible to those new to crochet while still producing a satisfying three-dimensional toy.
