This little mermaid doll is simple to make and sew, and is very cuddly- an ideal introduction to knitting simple texture. Knit her from any DK yarn you have in your stash!
To make your mermaid you will need: A ball of any DK yarn in two colours (one for skin tone and one for whichever colour you like for the tail and hair), 3mm straight knitting needles, scraps of yarn for the mouth and eyes, darning needle and stuffing.
Doll measures approximately 20cm tall when knitted up.
The Little Mermaid Doll is a handmade knitted toy designed by Gift Horse Kits. This intermediate-level knitting project creates a charming mermaid figure suitable for children or as a decorative keepsake. The doll features a human upper body with arms and a distinctive mermaid tail, complete with facial features and customizable hair and tail colors.
This pattern employs fundamental knitting techniques appropriate for intermediate crafters. The primary stitch construction method used throughout the doll is seed stitch, which creates a textured, bumpy surface resembling seeds. Seed stitch is achieved by alternating knit and purl stitches in every row—working K1, P1, K1, P1 sequences—with the starting stitch switching between rows to maintain the consistent texture pattern. This technique is particularly featured in the mermaid tail construction, where it produces visual interest and authentic scale-like appearance.
The pattern incorporates standard toy-making techniques including shaping pieces through increases and decreases, seaming components together using a darning needle, and stuffing the finished pieces with toy filling to create a three-dimensional form.
Needles: One pair of 3mm straight knitting needles
Yarn: The pattern requires DK (double knitting) weight yarn in multiple colors:
Additional Supplies: A darning needle for seaming and finishing, and toy stuffing for filling the completed doll pieces to create shape and dimension.
This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty, making it suitable for knitters who have mastered basic stitches and are ready to tackle simple shaping, color work, and toy assembly techniques.
