Little Winifred by Sarah Ronchetti
What is Being Made
Little Winifred is a children's tunic designed by Sarah Ronchetti that offers versatile styling options for multiple seasons. The garment can be knit as a tunic length to wear over leggings or jeans, or extended to dress length to wear over tights or bare-legged. Available in sizes ranging from 12 months to 5 years, with chest measurements from 19 inches (48.5cm) to 24 inches (61cm), this piece is a classic wardrobe staple for young children.
Construction and Techniques
Little Winifred is knit from the top down using the raglan increase method, which creates a simple and elegant construction. This top-down approach allows for easy fitting adjustments and eliminates the need for seaming. The pattern incorporates strategic shaping at the waist to accommodate hip fullness while maintaining a straight, flattering skirt silhouette. The design includes approximately 1 to 1.5 inches (2.5 to 3.5cm) of ease for comfortable movement and layering.
Stitches and Stitch Techniques
The pattern uses fundamental knitting stitches and techniques appropriate for an intermediate-level knitter. Key stitches include:
- Knit (k) – the basic knit stitch forming the primary fabric
- Purl (p) – used for textural variation and ribbing
- Knit through the back loop (k1tbl) – creates a twisted stitch for added definition
- Knit front and back (kfb) – an increase technique used for the raglan shaping
Raglan increases are distributed evenly across the garment to create the characteristic diagonal shaping lines that define this construction method.
Materials and Notions
Little Winifred is worked in aran weight yarn, a medium-weight yarn that knits at a standard gauge suitable for children's garments. The pattern requires standard knitting notions including stitch markers for tracking raglan increases, a darning needle for weaving in ends, and a cable needle for any cable techniques if incorporated into the design. Scrap yarn is also recommended for stitch holders or temporary cast-on methods.
