Product Description

My son asked me if I could make him a triangle shaped scarf ‘like the ones you wear mum, but not so girly…’ Ever up for a challenge I created this cosy design – a top down triangular shawl with glorious garter stitch stripes and practical ties, essential for keeping the scarf in place during play! The Gap is formed by using reverse stocking stitch on the central stitch. It means the back of the shawl looks almost as good as the front (anyone with kids will know that reversible clothing is always a good thing!)

For kids you can use practical, machine washable yarns in their favourite colours but a ‘grown up’ version in hand dyed gradient, speckled or semi-solid yarn would look fabulous too!

Yarn RequirementsMC approx 160m/175yds DK yarn. CC approx 120m/131yds Chunky yarn.

Mind the Gap Triangular Shawl Scarf by Forest Flower Knits

What is Being Made

Mind the Gap is a top-down triangular shawl scarf designed for both children and adults. The design features a distinctive gap formed down the center of the scarf, created using reverse stockinette stitch on the central stitch. The triangular shawl is finished with practical ties to keep the scarf securely in place during active play or everyday wear. The reversible construction means the back of the shawl looks nearly as polished as the front, making it practical for children's clothing where durability and easy care are essential.

Techniques Used

This knitting pattern employs several key techniques to achieve its unique design:

  • Top-down construction: The shawl is knitted from the top downward, allowing for easy adjustments to the final size and shape
  • Garter stitch stripes: Bold, textured stripes in garter stitch create visual interest and dimension that really stands out, especially when using chunky yarn
  • Reverse stockinette stitch: Used strategically on the central stitch to form the signature gap feature, with the purl bumps facing outward to create the distinctive look
  • Reversible design: The construction method ensures both sides of the shawl are visually appealing, a practical consideration for children's garments
  • Tie attachment: Practical ties are incorporated into the design to secure the triangular scarf in place

Stitches Used

The pattern utilizes fundamental knitting stitches suitable for beginner-level knitters:

  • Garter stitch: The primary stitch used for the striped sections, created by knitting every row to produce horizontal ridges
  • Reverse stockinette stitch: Used on the central stitch to form the gap feature, with purl stitches creating texture on the right side
  • Stockinette stitch: Likely used in supporting sections of the construction

Materials and Yarn

Mind the Gap is designed to work with multiple yarn weights, offering flexibility for different finished looks and textures:

  • Chunky weight yarn: Creates bold, prominent garter stitch stripes that really stand out visually. The sample uses Stylecraft Alpaca Chunky (80% Acrylic, 20% Alpaca blend; 134m/147 yards per ball)
  • DK weight yarn: Provides a lighter alternative for more delicate versions. The sample includes Stylecraft Special DK (100% acrylic; 294m/322 yards per 100g) in Graphite for the main color
  • Yarn options: For children's versions, practical machine-washable acrylic yarns in favorite colors work well. For adult versions, hand-dyed gradient yarns, speckled yarns, or semi-solid colorways would create a sophisticated appearance

Difficulty Level

This pattern is rated as beginner-friendly, making it accessible to knitters new to the craft. The straightforward combination of garter stitch and reverse stockinette stitch, along with the top-down construction method, provides an excellent foundation project for developing fundamental knitting skills while still creating a stylish, wearable garment.

Design Inspiration

Mind the Gap was created in response to a child's request for a triangular scarf similar to those worn by adults, but with a more masculine aesthetic. The designer successfully balanced style with practicality by incorporating machine-washable yarn options, secure ties for active wear, and a reversible construction that extends the garment's visual appeal and durability for children's use.
