Product Description
The stripes in this shawl twist and turn to form diamonds, arranged in a parabolic curve. It is crocheted in slip stitches. The shawl is based on my technique of long rows: Once the setup row is done, the rest of the shawl is relatively mindless.
Pattern includes written instructions and tutorials for the stitches and for my technique of working in long rows. The stitches used are front loop only slip stitch (F), back loop only slip stitch (B) and inverse back loop only slip stitch (iB).
yarn: 150 g (5.5 oz) Holst Supersoft Uld in Slate Grey (861 m/ 942 yards) 150 g (5.5 oz) Holst Supersoft Uld in Aubergine (861 m/ 942 yards)
hook: 4 mm (US size G)
also needed: 74 stitch markers (or threads in a constrasting color)
Thanks to Katharina Sokiran for proofreading and to Regina for testing and providing me with progress pictures!
The pattern is available in English and in German.

Normalparabel Crochet Shawl by Tanja Osswald
What is Being Made
Normalparabel is an advanced crochet shawl designed by Tanja Osswald that combines mathematical precision with fiber artistry. The shawl measures 1.33 m x 62 cm (52.5 in x 24.5 in) and features a sophisticated design based on parabolic curves. This downloadable PDF pattern is ideal for experienced crocheters seeking a project that merges geometry with textile creation.
Design Inspiration and Mathematical Foundation
The shawl's structure is inspired by the parabola, one of four conic sections in mathematics (alongside circles, ellipses, and hyperbolas). Each parabola can be expressed through a quadratic function, and Tanja Osswald has ingeniously used these mathematical parameters to calculate specific elements of the shawl's construction. This approach creates a garment where mathematical beauty translates into visual and tactile design.
Crochet Techniques and Stitches
Normalparabel is crocheted entirely in slip stitches, making this an advanced project that requires strong foundational crochet skills and precision. The slip stitch technique, typically used for joining and creating subtle textures, becomes the primary structural element throughout the entire shawl. This choice creates a refined, delicate fabric with consistent texture.
The pattern is divided into sections, with Part I representing the main pattern repeat. Crocheters will need to work approximately 30 grams of yarn (1 ounce) for every 2 rows of the main pattern, allowing for careful planning of yardage and color placement.
Materials and Yarn Specifications
- Yarn: Holst Supersoft Uld in two colors—Slate Grey and Aubergine
- Total Yardage: 150 g (5.5 oz) of each color, totaling approximately 1,722 meters (1,846 yards)
- Actual Usage for Pictured Shawl: 654.6 meters (715.9 yards) in Aubergine and 826.9 meters (904.3 yards) in Slate Grey, using 114 g (4 oz) and 144 g (5 oz) respectively
- Crochet Hook: 4 mm (US size G)
- Stitch Markers: 74 stitch markers for tracking pattern repeats and increases
Gauge and Construction Details
The pattern specifies a gauge of approximately 27 stitches and 28 rows, which is essential for achieving the intended finished dimensions. Accurate gauge is particularly important in this advanced project, as the mathematical calculations underlying the parabolic design depend on consistent stitch and row measurements.
Pattern Notes
This pattern was proofread by Katharina Sokiran and test crocheted by Regina, ensuring accuracy and clarity for advanced crocheters. The Normalparabel pattern is copyrighted by Tanja Osswald (2014) and represents a unique intersection of mathematical thinking and fiber arts, making it an intellectually engaging project for experienced crafters.
