Nut and Bolt Crochet Dolls

What is Being Made

Nut and Bolt is a crochet doll pattern designed by Moji-Moji Design. This downloadable PDF provides instructions for creating amigurumi-style dolls with a mechanical or industrial theme, as suggested by their names. The pattern is suitable for crafters seeking to create decorative or collectible stuffed dolls using crochet techniques.

Craft and Techniques

This project uses crochet as the primary construction method. The pattern is written in American crochet terminology, making it accessible to crocheters familiar with US standard abbreviations and stitch names. The pattern demonstrates intermediate-level difficulty, indicating that crafters should have foundational crochet knowledge before beginning.

The pattern employs amigurumi construction techniques, which is a Japanese method of creating three-dimensional stuffed toys and dolls through crochet. A key technique featured in this pattern is the invisible decrease (invdec), which is specifically highlighted as an effective method for decreasing stitches in amigurumi projects when a tight, seamless finish is desired. This technique helps create smooth, professional-looking decreases that are less visible than standard decrease methods.

Stitches Used

  • Chain (ch) – the foundation stitch used to create base chains
  • Slip stitch (slst) – used to join rounds and create seamless transitions
  • Single crochet (sc) – the primary stitch for building the doll structure
  • Double crochet (dc) – used for creating texture and height variation
  • Invisible decrease (invdec) – a specialized decrease technique for seamless shaping in amigurumi

Materials and Yarn

This pattern calls for DK weight yarn, a lightweight yarn that provides good stitch definition and control for detailed amigurumi work. Crocheters will need an appropriate crochet hook sized for DK yarn, though the specific hook size is referenced within the pattern instructions. The pattern uses standard metric measurements (centimeters and millimeters) as well as imperial measurements (inches) for gauge and finished dimensions.

Pattern Format and Terminology

As a downloadable PDF, this pattern includes comprehensive pattern notes and terminology guides. The pattern uses standard crochet abbreviations and symbols: round brackets ( ) indicate groups of stitches to be worked into the same stitch or space, provide stitch counts for completion of rounds or rows, or contain explanatory notes. Square brackets [ ] denote groups of stitches to be repeated the number of times specified after the brackets. This clear formatting helps crafters follow instructions accurately throughout the project.
