Product Description

Omni is a one-skein, crocheted shawl pattern that has a simple stitch repeat makeing it easy to memorize and creates a simple and elegant piece.

It uses filet crochet to create lace holes that increase with every section repeat. The use of Herringbone Half Trebles help to create a flat, drapey fabric.

The pattern gives hook sizes, gauge information and estimated measurements of finished objects over four yarn weights (heavily laceweight, 4ply/fingering, DK and aran/worsted).

Hook: various depending on yarn weight used. sizes and gauges are suggested in the pattern.

Yarn: One 100g skein of any weight from heavy laceweight to aran/worsted. You can create whatever fabric density you like and in any fibre of your choice, so long as you like the resulting fabric. For a lerger shawl, use 200g of your chosen yarn weight.

Omni Crocheted One-Skein Shawl by Fay Dashper-Hughes

What is Being Made

Omni is a versatile crocheted shawl designed as a one-skein project that works across multiple yarn weights. The shawl begins at its narrowest point and progressively widens as you work, creating a triangular or wedge-shaped garment suitable for draping around the shoulders and neck. The pattern is scalable—while it functions beautifully as a single-skein shawl, crafters can extend the design to 2 or more skeins for a larger finished piece by repeating the pattern sections.

Techniques and Construction

Omni employs a straightforward construction method based on two repeatable crochet sections. This modular approach makes the pattern accessible for beginners while maintaining visual interest through stitch selection rather than complex shaping. The repeatable sections allow for easy customization of finished size without requiring pattern modifications.

The shawl's drape and fabric quality are achieved through the strategic use of herringbone half trebles, a stitch technique that creates a flattened, structured fabric. This stitch choice serves multiple purposes: it allows yarn to stretch further, maximizing yardage efficiency for one-skein projects, and it produces excellent drape characteristics essential to shawl construction. The herringbone texture also performs exceptionally well with variegated yarns, as the stitch pattern complements quick color changes without overwhelming the design.

Stitches Used

  • Herringbone half trebles – the primary stitch creating the signature flattened fabric and drape

Yarn and Materials

Omni accommodates an exceptional range of yarn weights, making it highly versatile for stash-busting and yarn experimentation. The pattern works with laceweight, 4 ply, DK, Aran, and worsted weight yarns. This broad compatibility means a single skein of any of these weights produces a finished shawl, though the dimensions and drape will vary by yarn weight. The pattern is particularly well-suited for hand-spun yarns, allowing makers to showcase unique, handcrafted fibers. Standard crochet hooks appropriate to your chosen yarn weight are required, with hook size determined by the specific yarn selected.

Additional Features

The pattern includes a clever finishing element designed to help secure the shawl around the neck, adding practical functionality to the design. This thoughtful addition enhances wearability without complicating the overall construction process.
