Product Description
Our first European adventure from our new home in the UK was to Gay Paree.. Paris is a fantastic place in any season, but that July it was hot and green and full of tourists. Since we were visiting with two small kids, we managed to get to some of the typical sightseeing spots (in between trips to the playground). The stitch pattern in this hat reminds me of the incredible metalwork of the Eiffel Tower when viewed from below: arcs of metal forming an intricate and delicate-looking lace network that hold up a towering needle thrusting into the sky. This hat uses true lace knitting, with patterning on every row. Stitch pattern is presented in charted form only. Sample shown is worked in MadeleinTosh Vintage.
Skills needed: casting on, knitting in the round, knitting, purling, lace knitting, decreasing in pattern. Gauge: 16 sts/26 rows over 4 in/10 cm in stockinette.
Paris Beret by Rachel Brown
What Is Being Made
The Paris Beret is an advanced knitted hat inspired by the designer's travels to Paris, France. This beret features intricate lace patterning throughout, with the stitch design drawing inspiration from the iconic metalwork of the Eiffel Tower when viewed from directly below. The design captures the delicate arcs and network of metal that characterize this famous Parisian landmark, translating them into a sophisticated lace knit structure.
Techniques and Stitches Used
This is a true lace knitting project with patterning on every row, making it suitable for experienced knitters. The stitch pattern features intricate and delicate-looking lace work that creates a network effect similar to the architectural elements that inspired it. The pattern is described as fairly non-intuitive, which means the repeat may require careful attention and reference to the pattern instructions rather than relying on memorization alone. Knitters should be prepared to work through a complex stitch repeat with precision.
Yarn and Needles
The Paris Beret is worked in aran weight yarn, a medium-weight option that provides good stitch definition for the lace pattern work. The specific needle size and type are detailed within the downloadable PDF pattern instructions provided by designer Rachel Brown.
Difficulty Level
This project is rated as advanced difficulty, making it best suited for experienced knitters who are comfortable with complex lace patterns and working through intricate stitch repeats. The combination of lace knitting on every row and a non-intuitive pattern structure requires focus and attention to detail throughout the project.
