Product Description
Perplexus: Latin - 1. Entangled, Intricate, confused. 2. Unintelligible, complicated, intricate, inscrutable, ambiguous; dark, obscure.
Perplexus the scarf is all of the above: hidden in the angular, parallel lines is an optical illusion. There are no diagonal lines in the pattern, but your eye can clearly perceive diamond shapes lurking in the background. More, the squares may all look alike to the casual observer, but look again!
I knitted this scarf as my very first double-knit project. I had never attempted the eccentric art of double-knitting before, and within a few rows, I was completely addicted. The scarf is knitted in one piece, but the pattern is made up of seven square panels, each featuring a diamond within a diamond, formed from horizontal and vertical lines.
There are actually two entirely discrete patterns here - note the direction of the lines in the smaller, centre diamonds, and you will see what I mean. In one, the lines go up and down, and in the next,

What is Being Made
Perplexus is a knitted scarf featuring an intricate optical illusion design. The name derives from the Latin word meaning entangled, intricate, and inscrutable—qualities that perfectly describe this sophisticated accessory. The scarf is constructed as a single continuous piece composed of seven square panels, each showcasing a diamond-within-diamond motif that creates a mesmerizing visual effect.
Design and Visual Features
The defining characteristic of Perplexus is its clever optical illusion. Although the pattern contains only angular, parallel, horizontal, and vertical lines with no diagonal lines present, the viewer's eye perceives distinct diamond shapes emerging from the background. This perceptual phenomenon makes the scarf visually dynamic and engaging. Additionally, while the squares may appear uniform at first glance, closer examination reveals two entirely discrete patterns within the design. The smaller center diamonds feature lines oriented in a different direction than the surrounding elements, creating layered visual complexity.
Knitting Technique
Perplexus is executed using the double-knit technique, an advanced and specialized method in knitting craftsmanship. Double-knitting involves simultaneously working two separate layers of fabric using a single set of needles, creating a reversible, double-thickness textile. This technique allows for the creation of intricate colorwork and pattern definition that would be difficult to achieve through conventional single-layer knitting methods. The designer notes this was their inaugural double-knit project, and the technique proved so engaging that it sparked a lasting enthusiasm for the method.
Stitches and Construction
The scarf employs fundamental knitting stitches adapted for double-knit construction. The pattern is built through the strategic use of knit and purl stitches arranged to create the geometric diamond patterns across the seven panels. The double-knit method ensures that both sides of the scarf display the pattern, making it a reversible design suitable for wearing in either direction.
Materials
- Yarn Weight: 4-ply yarn, providing a medium weight suitable for creating defined stitch definition while maintaining reasonable fabric drape
- Needles: Appropriate needles for double-knit work with 4-ply yarn (specific needle size to be determined by gauge requirements in the full pattern)
Difficulty Level
Classified as an intermediate project, Perplexus is designed for knitters with foundational skills who are ready to explore more advanced techniques. While the designer successfully completed this as their first double-knit project, the intermediate designation reflects the learning curve associated with mastering double-knit methodology and maintaining consistency across the geometric pattern panels.
Pattern Format
Perplexus is available as a downloadable PDF pattern, allowing crafters to access the complete instructions, charts, and specifications digitally for immediate use.
