What Is Being Made

This is a decorative knitted cover designed to fit a 50ml sanitizer bottle, created by designer Andrew Lucas. The cover features a vibrant rainbow color scheme using eight distinct yarn colors: light blue, red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet. The finished piece includes a functional button closure and can be attached to a keychain or carabiner clip for convenient portability.

Knitting Techniques Used

This beginner-level knitting project employs several fundamental techniques suitable for those new to the craft. The pattern incorporates casting on to create the initial stitches, increasing stitches to expand the fabric width, and binding off to secure the final edge. A buttonhole is created through strategic cast-off and cast-on sequences, allowing the cover to close securely around the bottle. The designer uses the bind and tie (B and T) finishing method, which involves threading the yarn end through a tapestry needle and passing it through live stitches before drawing them up and tying off for a neat finish.

Stitches Used

• Garter Stitch (gs) – Created by knitting every row, producing a textured, reversible fabric that appears the same on both sides
• Stocking Stitch (st st) – Alternating knit and purl rows to create a smooth, classic knitted appearance

Materials Required

This project requires 3.25mm knitting needles and double knitting wool in eight rainbow colors: light blue, red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet. Oddments (small leftover amounts) of each color are sufficient, making this an excellent project for using up yarn scraps. Additional materials include a 10mm button for closure, a carabiner clip or keyring for attachment, and a tapestry needle for finishing and weaving in ends. The cover is designed to fit a standard 50ml sanitizer bottle.

Pattern Structure

The cover begins with 14 cast-on stitches in light blue and establishes the base with garter stitch. A buttonhole is incorporated early in the design through a strategic row that casts off and then casts back on stitches. The pattern then transitions through multiple sections using both garter and stocking stitch to create visual interest and texture variation. Stitches are increased to 28 stitches partway through construction, allowing the fabric to expand to accommodate the bottle width. The rainbow color effect is achieved by working with the different yarn colors throughout the pattern.
