Riley Blake Classic Patchwork Quilt – Free Downloadable PDF Pattern
The Riley Blake Classic Patchwork is a free downloadable PDF quilting pattern produced in collaboration between Riley Blake Designs and Caskata Inc. It is designed for intermediate quilters and results in a stunning finished quilt measuring 69" x 85¾" — a generous throw or bed quilt size. The design is built around a classic on-point layout, combining bold patchwork blocks with elegant setting triangles and a wide border for a timeless, heirloom-quality look.
What Is Being Made
This pattern produces a single large patchwork quilt with a finished size of 69" x 85¾". The quilt is constructed from 12 Patchwork Blocks, each finishing at 12" x 12", arranged diagonally on point across the quilt center. Setting triangles and corner triangles fill the spaces between the on-point blocks, and the composition is framed by a wide outer border. The result is a structured, traditional quilt with a rich, scrappy aesthetic driven by the coordinating Classic Caskata fabric collection from Riley Blake Designs.
Techniques Used
- Strip piecing: The primary construction method for the Patchwork Blocks involves sewing assorted print rectangles together into strip sets, then crosscutting those strip sets into segments that are re-sewn to form the finished blocks. This efficient technique reduces individual piece handling and ensures consistent results across all 12 blocks.
- On-point (diagonal) setting: The 12 Patchwork Blocks are arranged and sewn together on the diagonal, meaning the blocks are rotated 45 degrees and set in diagonal rows. This classic quilting layout adds visual dynamism and elegance to the finished quilt.
- Setting triangles and corner triangles: Side setting triangles and corner triangles are used to fill the edges and corners of the on-point layout. Notably, these triangles are cut intentionally oversized so the quilt center can be squared up accurately after assembly, with a precise ¼" seam allowance maintained on all sides.
- Borders: A wide 6½" border (Border 2) is added to frame the quilt center. Border strips are cut across the width of fabric (WOF) and joined end to end as needed to achieve the required length. Quilters are instructed to measure through the center of the quilt before cutting border pieces, a best-practice technique that ensures flat, even borders.
- Straight-grain binding: The quilt is finished with a traditional binding, for which fabric is included in the requirements.
Stitches and Sewing Details
- All piecing is sewn with a standard ¼" seam allowance throughout, which is the industry-standard seam for quilting.
- All seams are sewn with right sides together unless otherwise noted in the pattern instructions.
- Border strips are joined using end-to-end straight seams to achieve the necessary border length.
Patchwork Block Construction Detail
Each of the 12 Patchwork Blocks is made using the following strip-piecing sequence:
- Four assorted print rectangles, each cut to 3½" x 15", are sewn together along their long edges to create a strip set.
- Each strip set is then crosscut into 3½" segments.
- Four of these segments are sewn together to complete one 12" x 12" finished Patchwork Block.
- This process is repeated to yield all 12 blocks required for the quilt center.
