Sediment Sweater by Teti's Knit Garden

What is Being Made

The Sediment Sweater is a cozy, pullover-style garment designed as an ultimate stay-at-home sweater. This knitted piece features a distinctive round yoke worked in contrasting mosaic colorwork, with the body and sleeves finished in a textured moss-like stitch pattern. The name draws inspiration from geological sediment formation, where each layer builds upon the previous one, reflected in the sweater's visual texture and construction method.

Construction Method and Techniques

This sweater is constructed using a top-down seamless construction worked in the round, eliminating the need for seaming and creating a continuous, unified garment. The yoke features mosaic colorwork, a technique where contrasting colors are introduced to create intricate patterned textures. In mosaic colorwork, each new row of stitches sits directly on top of the previous row, building depth and visual interest while mimicking natural rock formations. The body and sleeves transition from the patterned yoke into a simpler textured moss-like stitch pattern, providing visual contrast and reducing complexity in the lower sections of the garment.

Stitches and Stitch Patterns Used

  • Mosaic colorwork in the round yoke section, creating layered texture through strategic color placement
  • Moss stitch (or moss-like pattern) for the body and sleeves, a simple textured stitch that creates subtle visual interest
  • Standard knit stitches worked in the round using circular needles

Materials and Yarn Specifications

The Sediment Sweater is worked using Aran weight yarn, suitable for intermediate knitters. The pattern calls for two yarns held together throughout:

  • Lettlopi (100% Icelandic wool) in shade 1418 Straw as the main color, approximately 250–650 grams depending on size, with 100 meters per 50 grams
  • Drops Kid-Silk (75% mohair, 25% silk) in shade 29 Vanilla held together with the Lettlopi, approximately 63–163 grams depending on size, with 200 meters per 25 grams
  • Total estimated yardage for both colors held together ranges from 500 yards for smaller sizes to larger quantities for extended sizes
  • Circular needles appropriate for Aran weight yarn and the required gauge

Difficulty Level

This pattern is rated as intermediate, making it suitable for knitters with foundational skills in circular knitting, colorwork techniques, and garment shaping. The combination of mosaic colorwork in the yoke and seamless construction requires experience with these techniques, though the simpler moss stitch sections provide balance throughout the project.

Pattern Format

The Sediment Sweater pattern is provided as a downloadable PDF for private use, designed by Teti Lutsak of Teti's Knit Garden and published by Nutsknitwear. The pattern includes multiple size options to accommodate various finished garment dimensions.
