Spruce Cable Socks Pattern

The Spruce Cable socks pattern was inspired by walking through the forests of B.C. The Sitka Spruce is a native evergreen tree species in B.C. I can always spot a spruce in the forest by the scales on the bark and the stiff green needles.

Spruce Cable Socks by Northern Knits and Purl

Project Overview

The Spruce Cable Socks are a beginner-friendly knitted sock pattern designed by Natasha of Northern Knits and Purl. This downloadable PDF pattern creates a pair of socks inspired by the natural beauty of British Columbia's forests, specifically drawing design inspiration from the Sitka Spruce, a native evergreen tree species recognized by its distinctive bark scales and stiff green needles.

Craft and Technique

This project uses the knitting craft to construct socks from the ground up. The pattern is designed as a beginner-level project, making it an accessible introduction to sock knitting for crafters new to the technique. The socks are worked in the round, as indicated by the use of beginning of round markers in the pattern structure.

Stitches and Techniques Used

The Spruce Cable Socks incorporate fundamental knitting stitches and shaping techniques:

  • Knit stitch (k) – the primary stitch forming the fabric base
  • Purl stitch (p) – used for textural variation and pattern detail
  • Knit two together (k2tog) – a decrease stitch for shaping
  • Purl two together (p2tog) – a decrease stitch for shaping
  • Cable techniques – referenced in the pattern name, creating the distinctive textured cable pattern characteristic of these socks
  • Cast on (CO) – the foundation method for beginning the socks
  • Pick up (PU) – used for constructing sock sections

Materials: Yarn and Needles

The Spruce Cable Socks are designed to be worked in DK weight yarn, a lightweight yarn that creates a refined fabric suitable for comfortable, well-fitting socks. The pattern supports the use of contrasting colour (CC) and main colour (MC), allowing crafters to create socks with color work or striping if desired. Yarn support for this pattern was generously provided by Marissa of Rocky Mountain Yarn Co., a Canadian dyer whose yarns are inspired by nature. The yarn used for pattern development was from her In the Rockies collection, reflecting the natural inspiration behind the design.

Knitting needles appropriate for DK weight yarn in the round are required to complete this project, though specific needle size and type are detailed within the full PDF pattern.

Pattern Details

This is a downloadable PDF pattern that provides complete instructions for creating a pair of Spruce Cable Socks. The pattern includes standard knitting abbreviations and notations to guide crafters through each step of construction, from cast on through completion.
