Product Description

Stripes Ahoy! is a tailored pullover with a high, wide neckline, boatneck style, and set-in sleeves.

There is some waist and rear shaping yet the fit is relaxed. Optional bust dart (just a small one to not upset the striping).

In the pattern: a photo tutorial for the Ziggurat Method and the stripe jog that miraculously fits in precisely with the slipped-stitch faux seam of the caps.

As usual, there's the Helpful Table to keep track of increases from shoulder to underarm cast-on.

Shown in Wollmeise Pure.

Stripes Ahoy! Top-Down Boatneck Pullover by Åsa Tricosa

What is Being Made

Stripes Ahoy! is a tailored pullover sweater featuring a high, wide boatneck neckline. This top-down knit design offers relaxed fit with intentional waist and rear shaping for a flattering silhouette. The sweater is available in ten sizes ranging from 81 cm (32") to 127 cm (50") bust circumference, accommodating a wide range of body types. The finished garment is a versatile layering piece suitable for various seasons depending on yarn fiber choice.

Design Features and Construction Method

Stripes Ahoy! follows the Ziggurat construction method, a top-down knitting approach that eliminates the need for seaming. The sweater is knitted from the neckline downward with contiguous sleeve caps for set-in sleeves, creating a professional, tailored appearance. A cleverly integrated bust dart remains virtually invisible when worked into the striped colorwork pattern, providing shaping without visible seams or disruption to the design.

A distinctive design element sets this sweater apart: contrasting stripes are knitted on one sleeve while squares appear on the other, adding visual interest and personality to the finished piece. This asymmetrical detail makes the sweater a statement garment suitable for those seeking unique, eye-catching knitwear.

Stitches and Techniques Used

  • Top-down construction from neckline to hem
  • Set-in sleeves with contiguous sleeve caps
  • Stranded colorwork for striped and square patterns
  • Bust dart shaping integrated into colorwork
  • Waist shaping for tailored fit
  • Rear shaping for enhanced silhouette

The pattern requires no seaming, and only a minimal number of ends need to be woven in at completion, making finishing quick and straightforward. This construction method is ideal for intermediate knitters seeking a project with professional results and minimal finishing work.

Materials: Yarn and Needles

Yarn: Wollmeise Pure 4-ply superwash merino wool (526 meters or 575 yards per 150 gram skein). The main color (MC) is Feldmäuschen, a grey shade, requiring 2 skeins across all sizes. The primary contrast color (CC) is Schwarz (black), also requiring 2 skeins. Additional scraps of two contrast colors—Red and Orange—are used for the striped and square details on the sleeves.

Total Yardage Requirements: Approximately 1150–2000 meters (1250–2000 yards) depending on size selected. Smaller sizes (81–102 cm bust) require 1150–1450 meters, while larger sizes (107–127 cm bust) require 1550–1850 meters.

The 4-ply yarn weight combined with superwash merino fiber makes this sweater durable, easy-care, and suitable for frequent wear. Specific needle requirements are detailed within the pattern documentation.

Difficulty Level

This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty, appropriate for knitters with foundational skills who are ready to tackle colorwork, shaping, and top-down construction. The Ziggurat method and integrated bust dart require attention to pattern instructions, but the elimination of seaming and minimal finishing make this an achievable project for experienced beginners progressing toward advanced techniques.
