Product Description

This is growing to be one of our very favorite baby afghan patterns! An easy to follow stitch pattern, knits up the cutest hearts. We find that in a blue or green color, this is well suited for boy babies too. We started with the doll size blanket, and then we added directions for a baby blanket. Doll blanket is a good size for preemie babies at 17 b y 18 ½. Baby blanket is about 38 by 40. Uses worsted weight yarns, knitting needles, size 10.5.

Sweetheart Doll Blanket by Frugal Knitting Haus

Project Overview

The Sweetheart Doll Blanket is a completely reversible knitted throw designed for dolls, teddy bears, or preemie babies. This beginner-friendly blanket project creates a charming accessory with visual interest on both sides, making it an ideal gift or keepsake. The pattern can be scaled up for a full-size baby afghan with modifications noted in the original instructions.

What Is Being Made

This is a small rectangular blanket measuring approximately 17 inches wide by 18½ inches high after wet blocking. The reversible design means both sides of the blanket display the same attractive pattern, eliminating the need to hide a "wrong side." The finished piece features a neat 3-stitch knit border on each end, providing a polished, professional appearance.

Techniques Used

The Sweetheart Doll Blanket employs fundamental knitting techniques suitable for beginners. The pattern uses basic cast-on and knit rows to establish the foundation, followed by a repeating stitch pattern that alternates between knit and purl stitches. The reversible quality is achieved through the strategic placement of knit and purl stitches, which create a balanced, symmetrical pattern when viewed from either side. Wet blocking is recommended as the finishing technique to achieve the specified finished dimensions and to even out the stitches for a professional result.

Stitches Used

  • Knit stitch (K) – The primary stitch forming the fabric and borders
  • Purl stitch (P) – Used in combination with knit stitches to create the reversible pattern texture

The pattern repeats across rows, with knit and purl stitches arranged in specific sequences to build the decorative design. A consistent 3-stitch knit border frames each end of the blanket, providing structure and definition.

Materials and Specifications

Yarn: Worsted weight yarn, approximately 4½ ounces total. Worsted weight is a medium-thickness yarn that works up quickly and creates a fabric with good drape and durability, making it ideal for blankets.

Needles: One pair of U.S. size 10½ needles, appropriate for worsted weight yarn and the desired gauge.

Gauge: 4 stitches and 6 rows equal 1 inch, which is essential to achieve the specified finished dimensions. Checking gauge before beginning ensures accurate sizing.
