What is Being Made

The Hufflepuff Pride Shawl is a one-size-fits-most adult shawl designed by Born & Raised Knits. This knitted accessory features stranded colorwork in a flat knitting construction, making it a versatile piece suitable for various occasions and body types.

Yarn and Materials

This shawl is worked using two colors of Hedgehog Fibres Skinny Singles yarn, each requiring 375 yards. The main color (MC) is 'Genie' and the contrasting color (CC) is 'Highlighter.' The pattern calls for yarn held double, effectively utilizing the 4-ply weight yarn to create the desired fabric. Knitting needles required are US 7 (4.5 mm) in a 32-40 inch circular or appropriate length for flat knitting. Additional notions include a darning needle for finishing and optional stitch markers to help track your progress.

Knitting Techniques and Stitches

This intermediate-level shawl employs stranded colorwork in flat knitting as its primary technique. Stranded colorwork, also known as Fair Isle knitting, involves carrying two colors of yarn across the work simultaneously to create a patterned fabric. The designer recommends carrying your colors across the work by 'locking' your yarn every 3 stitches to avoid long floats—loose horizontal strands of yarn on the back of the work that can catch or create uneven tension.

The pattern utilizes fundamental knitting stitches and techniques including:

  • Knit (k) - the basic knit stitch that forms the foundation of the fabric
  • Purl (p) - the reverse of the knit stitch, used to create texture and pattern variation
  • Yarn over (yo) - creating new stitches to add openwork and lace elements
  • Slip, slip, knit (ssk) - a left-leaning decrease that reduces stitch count while maintaining shaping

The first 8 rows of the pattern are written out in detail for your convenience, allowing you to establish the pattern repeat before progressing through the remainder of the shawl.
