Product Description
The Venus socks are knitted from the cuff down towards the toes. They are started with an optional tubular cast on which provides a stretchy edge to the cuff. The heel flaps are knitted with a reinforced stitch pattern for durability and the heels are round French heels. Instructions are given for modifying the gusset for a more generous fit.
The socks are perfect for stash busting leftover socks yarns as you can work every lace stripe with a different color, but the socks would look beautiful in just one color as well.

Venus Socks by Sari Nordlund
What Is Being Made
The Venus socks are a pair of knitted socks designed by Sari Nordlund as a beginner-friendly knitting project. These socks are worked from the cuff down towards the toes and feature lace stripes throughout the design, making them an excellent project for both stash busting and creating beautiful, wearable garments. The socks are sized as one size with a circumference of 20 cm (8 inches) and adjustable length to customize the fit for different wearers.
Knitting Techniques and Construction
The Venus socks employ several key knitting techniques that balance durability with visual interest:
- Cuff Construction: The socks begin with an optional tubular cast on, which creates a stretchy, professional-looking edge at the cuff that provides comfortable elasticity and prevents rolling.
- Heel Reinforcement: The heel flaps are knitted using a reinforced stitch pattern specifically designed to increase durability in this high-wear area of the sock.
- Heel Style: Round French heels are used, offering a comfortable fit and smooth transition from the leg to the foot.
- Gusset Modifications: Instructions are provided for adjusting the gusset, allowing knitters to customize the fit for a more generous silhouette if desired.
- Lace Stripes: The design features lace stripes throughout, which can be worked in a single color for a cohesive look or in multiple colors for a vibrant, stash-busting effect.
Yarn and Materials
The Venus socks require a total of 300 meters (350 yards) of fingering weight sock yarn. The sample shown was knitted with Wool Me Once Merino socks in the colorway Aslan as the main color, a yarn composed of 75% superwash merino and 25% nylon with yardage of 425 meters (467 yards) per 100 grams. The pattern also incorporates Kässäkerho Pom Pom BFL Sock, a yarn blend of 75% wool (BFL) and 25% nylon. The fingering weight classification makes these socks suitable for standard sock needles and creates a fabric with good stitch definition for the lace pattern.
Difficulty Level
Designed as a beginner-level project, the Venus socks provide an accessible introduction to sock knitting while incorporating interesting design elements like lace stripes and reinforced heels. The straightforward cuff-down construction and clear instructions make this pattern suitable for knitters new to sock construction.
