1:6th Scale Deirdre Jumper by Frances Powell
Garment Overview
The Deirdre Jumper is a miniature knitted garment designed to fit 29 cm (11½ inch) tall dolls, including Curvy Barbie. This pattern creates a short summer jumper intended to sit above the waist, with sleeves that extend just beyond the elbows. The finished piece measures approximately 19 cm (7 inches) from cuff to cuff and 7 cm (3 inches) from back neck to hem. A layered styling approach is recommended, as wearing a garment underneath the jumper will showcase the lace pattern more effectively.
Design Features
- Batwing sleeves: The distinctive batwing sleeve shape provides enhanced flexibility for posing the doll while maintaining aesthetic appeal
- Lace pattern construction: The garment incorporates a lace pattern worked throughout, adding visual interest and texture to the miniature design
- Above-waist fit: The cropped length creates a contemporary summer silhouette suitable for 1:6th scale fashion
Knitting Techniques and Stitches
This advanced-level pattern requires proficiency in miniature knitting techniques. The lace pattern is the primary stitch focus, worked to a specific gauge. The pattern utilizes standard knitting abbreviations including knit (k), purl (p), and repeat instructions. A cable needle is listed as optional, suggesting the possibility of cable stitch elements within the design. Stitch holders or safety pins are required for managing stitches during construction.
Materials and Tools
Creating this 1:6th scale jumper requires precision tools and fine materials. The project calls for one pair of 2.00 mm knitting needles—extremely small needles suited to miniature work. Approximately 30–40 metres of No. 12 crochet cotton provides the yarn material, offering the delicate weight necessary for doll-scale garments. Additional supplies include 2 stitch holders or safety pins for holding stitches and an optional cable needle.
Skill Level and Suitability
Classified as an advanced difficulty pattern, the Deirdre Jumper is not recommended as a first miniature knitting project, even for experienced knitters. The combination of tiny gauge (6 rows = 1 cm and 5 stitches = 1 cm), thread-weight yarn, and small needle size demands substantial skill in tension control, stitch accuracy, and miniature garment construction techniques.
