1:6th Scale Fiona Cardigan by Frances Powell
What is Being Made
The Fiona Cardigan is a miniature knitted cardigan designed to fit 1:6th scale dolls standing 29 cm (11½ inches) tall, including Curvy Barbie. This downloadable knitting pattern creates a fully functional cardigan with button closures, featuring optional colorwork patterning. The finished cardigan measures approximately 7.5 cm (3 inches) across the chest and 10 cm (4 inches from neck to hem, with sleeve seams measuring 8 cm (3¼ inches).
Techniques Used
This intermediate-level knitting project employs several essential techniques suited to working at miniature scale. The pattern utilizes stocking stitch (stockinette stitch) as the primary fabric structure, created by alternating knit and purl rows to produce the classic smooth, V-textured knit fabric. The design incorporates colorwork patterning, with the pattern notes suggesting optional integration of contrast colors—including solid colors and random-dyed yarn—to create visual interest, though solid-color alternatives are available for simplified construction. The cardigan features button bands and closures, requiring careful stitch placement and finishing. Construction involves working multiple sections that are subsequently joined, utilizing stitch holders to manage stitches during assembly.
Stitches Used
- Knit stitch (k) – the fundamental stitch forming the face of stocking stitch
- Purl stitch (p) – the reverse stitch creating the back of stocking stitch fabric
- Knit two together (k2tog) – a decrease stitch for shaping
- Stocking stitch (sst) – the primary fabric pattern worked in alternating knit and purl rows
Materials
This pattern requires one pair of 1.50 mm knitting needles, plus a spare 1.50 mm needle or stitch holder for managing stitches during construction. The yarn is No. 12 crochet cotton, a fine thread-weight material ideal for miniature work, requiring 90 metres in the main color plus 10 metres each of two contrast colors for optional colorwork. The pattern calls for 7 buttons or beads measuring 4mm for fastening the cardigan front. Six stitch holders or safety pins are needed to secure stitches during the assembly process. The gauge is worked over stocking stitch at 6 rows to 1 cm and 5 stitches to 1 cm, critical measurements for achieving the correct finished dimensions at this miniature scale.
