Product Description
My granny square for 2019 Granny Square Day was a flower granny square. To celebrate Granny Square Day 2020, I am releasing the pattern for the pillow I made last year with my 2019 granny square. The front side of the pillow is composed of nine granny squares, and the back is simply a large traditional granny square. The pillow is joined along three sides, and the bottom is held together by 5 buttons. This allows the pillow case to be taken on and off of the pillow insert. I have made this pillow in three different color combinations. They are all made with MillaMia yarn, but any sport weight yarn would work! The yarn required for each of the three pillows is included in the pdf. You will need one ball of each of the colors of the flowers, two balls of the color of the front side, and two balls of the color of the back side. You will also need five buttons and a 14 by 14 inch pillow insert. Happy Granny Square Day 2020!
2019 Granny Square Day Pillow by Maggie Trunkhill
Project Overview
This downloadable crochet pattern creates a decorative pillow featuring granny squares, designed by Maggie Trunkhill for Granny Square Day 2019. The pillow is available in three colorway options: cream, pink, and green. The design combines traditional granny square motifs with a functional button-closure construction, making it an ideal intermediate-level crochet project for crafters looking to create a finished home décor piece.
What Is Being Made
A cushion cover pillow composed of crocheted granny squares with a removable design. The pillow front features nine individual granny squares joined together, while the back consists of a single traditional granny square. The two sides are seamed together on three edges, with the bottom secured by five buttons that allow the pillow cover to be easily removed from the pillow insert for cleaning or customization.
Construction Techniques
- Joining multiple granny squares using single crochet stitches to create the pillow front panel
- Seaming the front and back panels together along three sides
- Button attachment and placement for functional closure on the bottom edge
- Removable cover construction that fits standard pillow inserts
Crochet Stitches Used
- Single crochet stitch for joining granny squares
- Traditional granny square stitch pattern (for both front and back panels)
Materials and Yarn
This pattern is designed to be made with sport weight yarn, specifically MillaMia brand yarn as used in the designer's samples. However, the pattern notes that any sport weight yarn would be suitable for this project. Five buttons are required for the bottom closure, and a standard pillow insert is needed to complete the finished cushion.
Difficulty Level
Rated as intermediate difficulty, this project is suitable for crocheters with foundational skills who are comfortable working with granny squares and basic seaming techniques.
