518 Seedling Baby Blanket – Knitting Pattern by Kirsten Hipsky in Valley Yarns Valley Superwash
The 518 Seedling Baby Blanket is a charming, seamless knitted baby blanket designed by Kirsten Hipsky and worked in Valley Yarns Superwash yarn. Available in three finished sizes — 28", 32", and 36" square — this blanket is an ideal project for knitters of all experience levels, including true beginners. The design is built around a single mitered square that grows outward from just four cast-on stitches, making it a satisfying and visually rewarding knit from start to finish. The gender-neutral color palette makes it a wonderful handmade gift for any new baby.
What Is Being Made
This pattern produces a square baby blanket in three size options: 28", 32" (the shown sample size), and 36". The blanket is constructed as a single, seamless mitered square with a structured garter stitch border worked in four strips around the outer edges. The result is a soft, cozy, and beautifully finished baby blanket with a classic, understated texture and a fresh, nature-inspired color scheme.
Construction Technique: Seamless Mitered Square
The blanket is worked using a mitered square construction, which is one of the most satisfying techniques in knitting. Rather than knitting a flat rectangle and seaming, the knitter begins at the very center of the blanket with just 4 cast-on stitches divided by a marker, then increases outward on every wrong-side row. A make 1 (m1) increase is placed on either side of the center marker on each increase row, causing the fabric to grow diagonally in all four directions simultaneously. This creates the characteristic diamond-within-a-square geometry of a mitered piece.
Because the blanket is worked flat on long circular needles, the knitter works back and forth in rows rather than in the round, despite using circular needles. The circular needle accommodates the large stitch count as the blanket grows. The pattern is rated as beginner difficulty, and the simple two-row stripe repeat makes it easy to memorize and meditative to knit.
Stitches and Techniques Used
- Garter stitch: The entire body of the blanket is worked in garter stitch — knitting every row on both right-side and wrong-side rows. Garter stitch creates a squishy, reversible fabric with excellent drape and a subtle ridged texture, making it ideal for baby items.
- Make 1 (m1): The single shaping stitch used throughout. Worked by knitting into the back of the strand running between two stitches, this increase is nearly invisible and adds one stitch on each side of the center marker every increase row.
- Stripes: The body of the blanket is worked in a two-row stripe sequence alternating between color A (Grass) and color B (Spring Leaf), creating a subtle tonal stripe pattern within the garter stitch fabric.
- Seamless construction: No seaming is required for the main body of the blanket. The mitered square grows outward in one continuous piece.
- Pick-up and knit: Used extensively in the border strips. Stitches are picked up along the edges of previously worked sections at a rate of approximately one stitch for every two rows, which is the standard pick-up ratio for garter stitch edges.
- Worked flat: All sections — both the main body and the four border strips — are worked back and forth in rows.
- Slip marker (SM): A stitch marker is placed at the center of the cast-on and slipped on every row to keep the increase placement consistent throughout.
- Bind off: Each border strip is bound off individually after its rows are complete.
Border Construction
Once the mitered square body is complete, a four-part garter stitch border is added using color C (Brownie). The border is worked in four sequential strips rather than all at once, each strip picking up stitches from the edge of the previous strip and the blanket body. Each strip is worked for 20 rows total (two initial rows plus 18 additional rows) before being bound off. This method of building the border in stages creates neat, squared-off corners and a tidy, professional finish without any mi
