What Is Being Made

A Knitted Nativity is a collection of knitted doll figures designed to represent the characters of the Nativity scene. Each figure is knitted using the same basic pattern as a foundation, with variations achieved through different yarn colors and optional accessories. The finished figures measure approximately 20-23 centimeters in overall length, making them suitable for display or as decorative pieces. This downloadable PDF pattern allows crafters to create a complete Nativity set by following the individual pattern instructions for each character.

Techniques Used

The Nativity figures are constructed using several fundamental knitting techniques that make this project accessible to intermediate-level knitters. Short row shaping is employed throughout the construction, utilizing a simple wrap and turn method to create three-dimensional form and structure in the figures. This technique allows the knitter to increase and decrease rows strategically without casting off, enabling smooth shaping of the head, body, and limbs. The wrap and turn method is a foundational short row technique that involves wrapping yarn around a stitch before turning the work, which prevents gaps and creates neat transitions when working partial rows.

Stitches Used

The pattern relies on a limited palette of stitches to create the finished dolls. Stocking stitch forms the primary fabric throughout most of the figures, creating a smooth, finished appearance on the right side with characteristic V-shaped columns. Garter stitch is used selectively to add texture and structure where needed. Additionally, looped stitch is incorporated in limited areas, likely for details such as hair texture or facial features. This restrained approach to stitch variety keeps the pattern straightforward while still achieving visual interest and character definition.

Materials and Yarn

The pattern was originally designed using Hayfield Bonus DK yarn, a 100% acrylic fiber available in 100-gram balls with a yardage of 280 meters. However, the pattern notes that any DK weight yarn may be substituted as available, offering flexibility for crafters working with different yarn brands or stash yarn. The basic doll requires approximately 60-70 grams of DK yarn distributed across multiple colors: 15g each for legs, arms, and head (Colour A); 15g for the robe (Colour B); 10g for head-dress (Colour C); 5g for sash or headband (Colour D); 5g for sandals (Colour E); 10g for waistcoat (Colour F); and small oddments for details such as mouth embroidery (Colour G). Individual character patterns provide specific color requirements and additional yarn amounts as needed.

Tools Required

The pattern calls for 3.25mm knitting needles, which is the standard needle size for DK weight yarn and ensures proper gauge and fabric consistency throughout the project.
