Amigurumi Mel & Melvin the Gnomes
What Is Being Made
This downloadable crochet pattern features two charming amigurumi gnome designs: Mel the Big Gnome and Melvin the Little Gnome. Mel stands 13.5 inches tall, while Melvin is a smaller 8-inch version, making them perfect for creating a matched pair of stuffed toy gnomes. Both designs were created by Stacey Trock and are ideal for crafters looking to make adorable, three-dimensional crocheted characters with personality and charm.
Craft and Techniques
This project uses crochet as the primary construction method, classified as an intermediate difficulty level. The amigurumi technique is employed to create these three-dimensional stuffed gnomes, which involves crocheting in the round and strategically increasing and decreasing stitches to form the characteristic rounded, plush shapes typical of amigurumi toys. The pattern demonstrates flexibility in yarn weight selection, allowing crafters to customize their finished gnomes by adjusting yarn and hook sizes according to personal preference.
Stitches Used
The pattern utilizes fundamental crochet stitches essential to amigurumi construction:
- Chain (ch) – Used to create foundation chains and joining points throughout the pattern
- Single Crochet (sc) – The primary stitch for building the body, head, and features of both gnomes
- Single Crochet 2 Together (sc2tog) – A decrease stitch used to shape the gnomes and create proper amigurumi shaping
Materials and Yarn
The pattern calls for worsted weight yarn, with the sample projects crocheted in Ella Rae Classic (100% wool). For Mel the Big Gnome, approximately 170 yards of yellow yarn (Ella Rae Classic color #44) is needed, while Melvin the Little Gnome requires blue yarn in a smaller quantity. A Size H crochet hook is recommended for the worsted weight sample, though the pattern notes that any yarn weight can be used by following the hook size recommended on the yarn ball band and adjusting gauge as needed. For a bulkier, extra-cuddly result, crafters can substitute bulky weight yarn while accounting for increased yardage requirements.
Additional materials include a tapestry needle for weaving in ends and assembling pieces, and fiberfill stuffing (a few handfuls) to fill and shape the completed gnomes. This straightforward material list makes the project accessible for intermediate crocheters ready to tackle amigurumi construction.
