Amira Pullover by Andrea Rangel
What is Being Made
Amira is a seamlessly constructed pullover sweater designed to be worn cropped with no ease. The garment is worked from the bottom up in the round, creating a fitted silhouette that sits close to the body. This intermediate-level knitting project features both plain stockinette sections and stranded colorwork, making it an excellent choice for knitters looking to develop their color work skills while creating a wearable, modern garment.
Construction Techniques
The pullover is worked seamlessly from the hem upward, eliminating the need for seaming. The construction method combines working in the round for the body and sleeves with strategic flat sections as needed. When working the colorwork sections from a color chart, knitters follow the chart from right to left while working in the round. For any flat row sections, right side rows are worked right to left, and wrong side rows are worked left to right, requiring careful attention to chart direction.
A key technical consideration involves needle sizing: the pattern recommends using a larger needle specifically for the stranded colorwork sections, as many knitters naturally tighten their tension when working with multiple colors. Swatching in both plain stockinette stitch and stranded colorwork is strongly recommended to determine whether the larger needle is necessary for your individual knitting style. The cabled ribbing at the hem and cuffs draws in dramatically due to its structure, so a smaller needle size is not required for these sections.
Stitches Used
- Stockinette stitch for the main body fabric
- Stranded colorwork (also called Fair Isle) for the patterned sections
- Cabled ribbing for the hem and cuffs, providing both structure and visual interest
Materials and Yarn Weight
Amira is designed to be worked in worsted weight yarn, providing a fabric with good drape and durability suitable for a cropped pullover. The pattern is available in seven sizes, with yardage requirements ranging from 600 to 1084 yards for the main color (MC) and 59 to 107 yards for the contrast color (CC). The sample shown is worked in Brooklyn Tweed Shelter, which is 100% American wool, though any worsted weight yarn of similar yardage and gauge would be suitable for this project.
