Product Description

Arete is a colour-work cowl, crocheted in the round and then steeked (cut up the steek stitches). It can either be worn as a flat cowl with a twist, covering your shoulders and neck, doubled over on the inside to create a chunky neck cowl.

Arete is a great make if you are ready to tackle a larger tapestry crochet project that is easy to memorise but has is still challenging. There is very little reference to steeking crocheted work - lots of references to using crochet to reinforce knitting with slip stitches, but next to nothing on steeking crochet. This pattern has photo tutorials and a video tutorial to take you through it.

Yarn: The yarn used within the pattern is John Arbon Textiles Harvest Hues 4ply/fingering weight (65% Organic Falklands Merino, 35% Zwartbles) in shades Woad (A), Pomegranate (B) and Russet (C).

Arete Crocheted Cowl by Fay Dashper-Hughes

What is Being Made

Arete is a versatile crocheted cowl designed by Fay Dashper-Hughes that offers two distinct wearing options. This colour-work piece can be styled as a long cowl that covers both shoulders and neck for maximum warmth and coverage, or worn as a shorter wrap positioned over a single shoulder for a more relaxed aesthetic. The finished garment showcases tapestry crochet colour-work techniques combined with a steeking method, making it an ideal intermediate-level project for crocheters looking to expand their skills beyond basic colour-work into larger, more complex designs.

Techniques and Construction Methods

Arete employs several advanced crochet techniques that work together to create its distinctive structure and appearance. The primary construction method is tapestry crochet, a colour-work technique where multiple yarn colours are crocheted in the round while carrying unused colours inside the stitches. This method creates seamless, integrated colour patterns without the need for weaving in numerous ends.

The pattern incorporates steeking, a cutting technique traditionally used in knitting but adapted here for crochet. After completing the crocheted fabric in the round, specific sections are carefully cut to create openings and shaping. The design repeats quickly and is described as easy to memorise, allowing crocheters to establish a comfortable rhythm and complete the project efficiently within an estimated 41 hours of work time.

The cowl is finished with functional button and ribbon details, with instructions provided for both machine and hand-sewing methods to attach these embellishments.

Stitches Used

While the PDF content does not specify individual stitch names in detail, the construction relies on fundamental crochet stitches worked in tapestry crochet fashion. The technique involves carrying yarn colours inside stitches to build the colour-work pattern seamlessly throughout the round.

Materials and Yarn Specifications

Arete is designed to work with 3-ply, 4-ply, and DK weight yarns, providing flexibility for yarn substitution while maintaining proper fabric drape and structure.

The pattern features three distinct yarn colours, with the following yardage requirements:

  • Yarn A: 171g / 684m (747yds)
  • Yarn B: 81g / 324m (354yds)
  • Yarn C: 54g / 216m (236yds)

The recommended yarn is Harvest Hues by John Arbon Textiles, a premium natural fibre blend consisting of 65% Organic Falklands Merino and 35% Zwartbles wool. Each 100g skein yields 400m (437yds). The pattern calls for specific colourways: Woad (Yarn A, requiring 2 skeins), Pomegranate (Yarn B, 1 skein), and Russet (Yarn C, 1 skein).

Essential tools include 2.5mm and 3mm crochet hooks to achieve proper tension and fabric density across the colour-work sections. Additional materials required are 3 place markers for tracking pattern repeats, a tapestry needle for weaving in ends, scissors for the steeking process, 6 buttons measuring 2.5cm (1 inch) in diameter, and 2 lengths of ribbon at least 1.8cm (0.75 inch) wide and 55cm (21.75 inches) long for the finishing details.

Difficulty Level

This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty, making it suitable for crocheters with foundational skills who are ready to advance into larger tapestry crochet projects. The quick-to-memorise pattern repeat helps build confidence while working through the extended yardage, and the straightforward colour sequence makes it an excellent stepping stone toward more intricate colour-work designs without overwhelming complexity.
