Averin Lace Shawl by Lucy Hague

What is Being Made

Averin is a dramatic rectangular shawl designed by Lucy Hague, inspired by traditional Shetland lace-knitting techniques. This advanced knitting project produces a finished shawl measuring 70 inches in length (178 cm) and 17 inches in width (43 cm), making it a substantial and elegant accessory suitable for experienced knitters seeking a challenging lace project.

Construction Technique

The Averin shawl employs a sophisticated three-stage construction method that builds complexity and visual interest throughout the knitting process. The shawl begins with a main panel worked flat in a rectangular shape, establishing the foundation of the design. Once the central panel is complete, stitches are carefully picked up around all four edges, and an inner border is then worked in the round, creating a seamless transition between sections. The final stage involves knitting a delicate lace edging perpendicularly around the entire perimeter of the shawl, adding an ornamental frame that showcases the traditional Shetland lace aesthetic.

Stitches and Lace Patterns

The pattern incorporates garter stitch for structural elements and detailed lace stitch work as the primary design feature. The gauge swatch instructions specify working rows 1-8 of the Gauge Swatch Chart or written instructions, indicating that the design features charted lace patterns that require careful attention to stitch placement and yarn overs. The lace sections are measured at 26 stitches over 4 inches (10 cm) and 24 rows over 3.5 inches (8.9 cm) when blocked, demonstrating the open, airy nature typical of lace-weight knitting.

Materials and Tools

  • Needles: 3.5 mm / US size 4 needles in long circular format (recommended for managing the large number of stitches and working in the round)
  • Yarn Weight: Lace-weight yarn, suitable for creating the delicate, intricate patterns characteristic of traditional Shetland lace shawls

Skill Level

This is an advanced knitting project designed for experienced knitters. The combination of flat and circular knitting, lace pattern work, and the perpendicular edging technique requires strong foundational skills, comfort reading charts or written lace instructions, and the ability to troubleshoot tension and stitch placement issues independently.

Pattern Format

Averin is available as a downloadable PDF pattern, providing knitters with immediate access to detailed instructions, charts, and finished measurements for this independent designer project.
