Barbicel Cardigan by Fiona Alice
What is Being Made
Barbicel is a stranded colorwork cardigan designed by Fiona Alice and originally published in Pom Pom Quarterly Issue 22: Autumn 2017. This intermediate-level knitting project is constructed from separate pieces that are seamed together, with a neckband worked afterward to complete the garment. The cardigan is designed to be worn with up to a 15 cm (6") front opening, making it a versatile layering piece.
Sizing and Fit
Barbicel is available in 8 sizes with finished bust circumferences ranging from 94 cm (37") to 162.5 cm (64"). The pattern recommends selecting your size based on upper arm circumference or cross-back measurements rather than bust measurement alone. The sizing sample shown features a model with a 97 cm (38") bust who stands 162 cm (5'3") tall and wears size 3.
Knitting Techniques
This cardigan employs stranded colorwork as its primary decorative technique. The stranded colorwork pattern is designed to be easy to memorize, making it accessible for intermediate knitters new to this method. The pattern requires working with two colors simultaneously in certain sections—notably, two separate balls of yarn C are used when working front sections, with one ball used for rows 6 and 7 and a second ball for additional rows. This approach prevents excessive yarn floats and maintains even tension throughout the colorwork sections.
Stitches and Construction
The cardigan is worked primarily in stocking stitch combined with the stranded colorwork pattern. The construction method involves knitting individual pieces separately before seaming them together, which is a common approach for colorwork garments. After all pieces are assembled, stitches are picked up around the neckline to work a finishing neckband, creating a neat and professional edge.
Gauge and Needles
The pattern is worked on 3.5 mm needles with a gauge of 26 stitches and 32 rows over 10 cm (4") when measured over both stocking stitch and the stranded colorwork pattern after blocking. Achieving the correct gauge is essential for proper fit, particularly in a fitted cardigan design.
Yarn and Materials
Barbicel is designed to be worked in Holst Garn Supersoft, a 4-ply (fingering weight) yarn composed of 100% wool. Each 50 g ball contains 287 meters (314 yards) of yarn. The 4-ply weight combined with the 3.5 mm needles creates a fabric with good drape and definition for the stranded colorwork pattern. The specific yardage requirements vary by size, though the pattern indicates multiple balls are needed, particularly when working the colorwork sections with multiple colors.
