Bejeweled Cowl-Necklace Hybrid by Minimi Knit Design

What Is Being Made

Bejeweled is a versatile knitted accessory designed by Cristina T. Ghirlanda that functions as both a cowl and decorative necklace. This innovative design offers multiple styling options: wear it as a traditional cowl around the neck for warmth, style it as a statement necklace with beaded embellishments for a jeweled accent to winter outfits, or pull it up onto the head as a headband. The pattern comes in four sizes (S, M, L, XL) to accommodate different neck circumferences, making it an adaptable accessory for various body types.

Techniques and Construction

Bejeweled is worked in the round using the two-strand held together technique, which combines two different yarn weights to achieve the desired fabric characteristics. This method allows knitters to blend a delicate lace weight mohair yarn with a fingering weight yarn, creating a fabric with both ethereal drape and structural integrity. The pattern is worked in garter stitch when held in the round, a textured stitch pattern that creates a reversible, cushy fabric suitable for both close-to-neck wear and decorative display. The beading element is a key design feature, with knitters encouraged to select beads that complement their yarn colors and personal style preferences.

Stitches Used

  • Garter stitch worked in the round
  • Two-strand held together construction technique

Materials and Yarn Specifications

This pattern requires a combination of two yarns held together simultaneously to create the proper gauge and fabric weight:

  • Lace Weight Mohair Yarn: 120 (120, 135, 150) meters / 130 (130, 145, 165) yards (including 10% allowance). The pattern shows Lamana Premia, which is composed of 60% super kid mohair and 40% silk, with 300 meters per 25-gram ball. The recommended color is Gauge #48. One ball of lace weight mohair is required.
  • Fingering Weight Yarn: 115 (115, 130, 145) meters / 125 (125, 140, 155) yards (including 10% allowance). The pattern shows Gepard Cash Sock, which contains 70% merino wool, 20% polyamide, and 10% cashmere, with 416 meters per 100-gram ball. The recommended color is #170. One ball of fingering weight yarn is required.
  • Needles: 4 mm / US 6 circular needles for working in the round
  • Gauge: 17 stitches and 42 rounds = 10 centimeters / 4 inches in garter stitch when worked in the round with two strands held together on 4 mm / US 6 needles, after blocking
  • Beads: The pattern encourages creative bead selection, allowing knitters to personalize their Bejeweled piece with beads of their choice

Difficulty Level

Bejeweled is rated as a beginner-friendly pattern, making it accessible to knitters who are new to the craft or those seeking a straightforward project. The use of garter stitch and basic two-strand techniques keeps the pattern approachable while still delivering a sophisticated, wearable result.

Sizing and Measurements

The pattern is available in four sizes (S, M, L, XL), with measurements provided in both centimeters and inches for international accessibility. Size S is designed to fit smaller neck circumferences, with larger sizes accommodating progressively larger necks.
