Product Description
Belledonne mountain range forms the eastern wall of Grenoble. To see the beauty of the mountains you need some snow. Snow covers all channels caused by erosion and shapes the relief with its steep slopes and summit areas. That gives essentially beauty to the mountains. I wanted to transform this 3D relief into a hat pattern. The steep slopes and deep channels give the relief to this hat. This hat is knitted in a round. Pattern contains both written and charted instructions.
Belledonne Knit Hat by Lina Gaubard
Design Inspiration and Concept
Belledonne is an intermediate-level knit hat pattern inspired by the Belledonne mountain range that forms the eastern wall of Grenoble. The designer, Lina Gaubard, transformed the three-dimensional relief of the mountains—with their steep slopes, deep erosion channels, and dramatic summit areas—into a textured hat pattern. The snow-covered peaks and valleys that define the mountain landscape are recreated through strategic stitch placement and shaping techniques that add visual and tactile relief to the finished hat.
What Is Being Made
Belledonne is a knit hat designed to fit multiple head sizes. The pattern includes five finished size options: small (14"), medium (16"), large (18"), extra-large (22"), and extra-extra-large (24") circumferences, with corresponding metric measurements of 35.5 cm, 40.5 cm, 45.5 cm, 56 cm, and 58.5 cm respectively. This range makes the pattern suitable for children through adults.
Knitting Technique and Construction
The hat is knitted in the round, a method that creates a seamless, tubular fabric ideal for hats and other circular projects. Working in the round eliminates the need for seaming and allows for continuous stitch pattern development. The textured relief that mimics the mountain's steep slopes and channels is achieved through strategic increases, decreases, and stitch manipulation that create dimensional peaks and valleys across the hat's surface.
Stitches and Stitch Patterns
The pattern uses fundamental knitting stitches including knit and purl stitches. These basic stitches are combined to create the stockinette stitch base fabric, which provides a smooth canvas for the three-dimensional relief elements. The relief texture is built through strategic placement of increases and decreases that create the steep slopes and deep channels inspired by the mountain range. The pattern works on the right side (RS) of the fabric, with stitch markers used to track pattern repeats and size increases throughout the crown shaping.
Yarn and Materials
Belledonne is designed for fingering weight or 4-ply yarn, a lightweight yarn category that produces fine, detailed fabric. The sample hat shown in the pattern was knitted using Drops Fabel, a fingering weight wool yarn available in 25-gram skeins with 100 meters of yardage per skein (or 50-gram skeins with 200 meters). Fingering weight yarn is ideal for creating the precise stitch definition needed to showcase the textured relief pattern.
The pattern requires 3 mm (US 2½) needles or the appropriate needle size needed to achieve the specified gauge. Additional materials include a tapestry needle for weaving in yarn ends and stitch markers to track pattern repeats and increases during the in-the-round construction.
Gauge and Blocking
The pattern specifies a gauge of 25 stitches and 36 rows over a 10 cm × 10 cm (4" × 4") swatch in stockinette stitch after blocking. Achieving the correct gauge is essential for proper hat fit and for the textured relief elements to display as intended. Blocking—the process of wetting and shaping the finished knit fabric—helps even out stitches and allows the three-dimensional mountain-inspired texture to fully develop and set.
Skill Level
Belledonne is rated as an intermediate knitting pattern, appropriate for knitters with foundational skills in working in the round, reading pattern abbreviations, and managing stitch markers and shaping techniques. The pattern assumes familiarity with basic knit and purl stitches and the ability to follow written instructions with standard knitting abbreviations.
