Product Description
Beluga Sturgeon is the fifth pattern in the Summer of Sea Creatures 2020. This year we are highlighting endangered species. Please join us in knitting and raising awareness about these animals. Tag me @yarnigans or #summerofseacreatures on instagram. Thanks for joining me again for this fifth year of summer of sea creatures!*
Beluga Sturgeon is knitted almost entirely in one piece, with the pectoral fins knitted separately and sewn on. You will have to be able to knit on double pointed needles to make the sturgeon, as well as do basic increases and decreases. The gauge is not super important here, but I knitted mine extra tight because you will need to really stuff it firmly. The tighter the gauge, the better, here.
Beluga Sturgeon Knitted Toy by Rachel Borello Carroll
Project Overview
This downloadable knitting pattern creates a Beluga Sturgeon toy, designed by Rachel Borello Carroll. The pattern depicts a juvenile Beluga Sturgeon, featuring the characteristic bony appearance along the spine that younger fish display before maturing. This intermediate-level knitting project combines educational content about the species with hands-on crafting, making it suitable for knitters with some experience who are ready to tackle more complex shaping and construction techniques.
About the Beluga Sturgeon
The Beluga Sturgeon is one of the ocean's largest predatory fish species, with a lineage dating back to the Triassic period approximately 200 million years ago. These remarkable creatures inhabit the Caspian and Black seas in southeast Europe, along with the rivers that connect to these bodies of water. Beluga Sturgeons exhibit anadromous behavior similar to salmon, spending the majority of their lives in ocean waters before returning to freshwater rivers to spawn. The species is known for exceptional longevity, with individuals living well over 100 years. While typical adult specimens range from 5 to 10 feet in length, the largest Beluga Sturgeon ever recorded measured 24 feet long.
Conservation Context
The Beluga Sturgeon faces significant endangerment due to multiple pressures. The species is famously known for producing the world's most expensive caviar from their eggs. Because all Beluga Sturgeons must return to rivers to spawn, they become vulnerable to fishing during spawning season. These intensive fishing pressures, combined with habitat loss, threaten the species' survival.

Pattern Details
This knitting pattern uses aran-weight yarn, a medium-weight option that works well for creating structured toy pieces with good stitch definition. The intermediate difficulty level indicates the pattern includes techniques beyond basic knitting fundamentals, likely incorporating shaping methods necessary to form the sturgeon's distinctive body structure, including its elongated form and the pronounced bony ridge along the spine characteristic of juvenile specimens. The downloadable PDF format provides detailed instructions for completing this educational and decorative knitted toy.
