Product Description
These socks contain a large main pattern, as well as a small pattern on each side that starts in the ribbing and ends at the tip of the foot. The lace stitches are a bit difficult to execute, especially because of the relatively tight gauge you want to have in a sock. The work is therefore longer than for normal socks, but the result is so satisfying!
Recommended yarn: Life in the Long Grass LITLG Fine Sock. A substitute in shown below.
Bird Star Socks by Maude L. Baril
What is Being Made
Bird Star is an advanced knitted sock design featuring Estonian lace stitch work. The pattern creates ankle or mid-calf socks with a foot circumference of 21 to 24 cm (8¼ to 9½ inches). The design showcases a large main lace pattern on the foot combined with smaller complementary patterns running along each side, beginning in the ribbing and extending to the tip of the foot.
Techniques Used
This project employs Estonian lace stitch techniques, specifically a stitch variation sometimes referred to as Flower star. The lace work requires careful execution due to the tight gauge typical of sock knitting, making this an advanced-level undertaking. The designer notes that creating the stitch charts themselves presented a significant challenge, reflecting the complexity of the pattern work. The combination of main pattern and side patterns requires sustained attention to multiple stitch sequences throughout the sock construction.
Stitches Used
The primary stitch focus is the Estonian lace stitch, which forms the decorative elements throughout the sock. The pattern incorporates ribbing at the cuff and utilizes lace decreases and yarn overs characteristic of Estonian lace traditions. The side patterns maintain continuity from the ribbing through to the foot tip, requiring coordination between the main pattern section and the smaller side motifs.
Materials
- Yarn: LITLG Fine Sock by Life in the Long Grass (75% fiber content as specified in pattern)

Pattern Notes
The downloadable PDF format includes comprehensive stitch charts on the final page, which the designer recommends printing for ease of reference during knitting. Due to the intricate lace work and tight sock gauge, this project requires more time to complete than standard sock patterns, but yields highly satisfying results. This design represents the designer's exploration of Estonian lace traditions and may indicate future pattern variations incorporating similar stitch techniques.
