Product Description
I have heard that Boris Johnson likes a hot cup of tea, so I think he will heartily aprove of the Boris Johnson tea cosy.
The Boris Johnson tea cosy depicts Bojo in a suit and tie, with his iconic hair all ruffled. I based the cosy on his most challenging time in office - the Covid-19 pandemic.
In one hand he is holding a PPE facemask, and the other hand is giving us the thumbs up. Whilst about his feet are a couple of corona viruses with red protein spikes.
I think it really encompasses the message of 'in it together to beat the virus'. I think Boris Johnson looks quite a lot like the prime minister and its a fun tea cosy.
We have a pot, we have a plan, drink hot tea, if you can! The Boris Johnson tea cosy is perfect for the politic-tea minded.
The pattern will be available for digital download as soon as you have completed purchase, so you could start knitting him very soon!
This product is the knitting pattern only to make your own Boris Johnson tea cosy.
Boris Johnson Tea Cosy Knitting Pattern
What is Being Made
The Boris Johnson Tea Cosy is a decorative knitted cover designed to fit over a standard teapot. This tea cosy combines functional insulation with novelty appeal, created by independent designer TeaCosyFolk. Tea cosies are small, fitted garments that keep tea warm while adding a playful or decorative element to the kitchen or dining table.
Craft and Primary Technique
This project uses knitting as the primary craft method. Knitting involves interlocking loops of yarn using two needles to create fabric from a series of interconnected stitches. The Boris Johnson Tea Cosy is classified as an intermediate difficulty project, meaning it requires foundational knitting knowledge and comfort with various stitch techniques and shaping methods.
Stitches and Techniques Used
The pattern employs a range of knitting stitches and techniques to create structure and detail:
- Basic stitches: Knit stitches and purl stitches form the foundation of the fabric
- Decreases: K2tog (knit 2 stitches together), P2tog (purl 2 stitches together), SKPO (slip, knit, pass slipped stitch over), and SL1 PSSO (slip one stitch, pass slip stitch over) are used to shape the cosy and reduce stitch counts
- Increases: Inc1 (increase in next stitch) creates additional stitches by knitting in the front and back of a stitch on knit rows, or purling in the back and front on purl rows
- Loop creation: ML (make loop) technique worked on wrong side rows creates decorative loops by knitting into a stitch without removing it from the needle, wrapping yarn around the finger, and purling into the front of the same stitch
- Finishing: T&D (thread and draw) technique secures remaining stitches by threading yarn through them and drawing the opening closed
- Repetition: Rep (repeat) instructions allow efficient pattern writing for sections that recur throughout the cosy
Materials: Yarn and Needles
This pattern is worked with DK weight yarn, a medium-weight yarn that provides good stitch definition and drape suitable for a fitted tea cosy. DK yarn creates a fabric with balanced density—not too thick or too thin—making it ideal for both structure and comfort. The pattern requires knitting needles appropriate for DK yarn, typically in the US 6–8 range, though specific needle size recommendations appear in the full pattern instructions.
Pattern Format
The Boris Johnson Tea Cosy is available as a downloadable PDF, allowing crafters to access the complete pattern immediately and print it for reference while working. This format includes comprehensive knitting abbreviations and stitch instructions to guide knitters through each step of construction.
