Product Description
Sometimes I set myself a challenge, and this was one. I woke up thinking 'wouldn't it be good to make a crochet bow in one piece, the loops and the tails all made in one'. This is the result. Surprisingly it took only one 'prototype' before making a bow I was happy with.
Made entirely in one piece, the only tricky bit being some chain 'loops' over the centre. I love it and it is now a brooch. I can see many more in the making for presents, decorations or simply to adorn gift wrappings.
Written in UK and US crochet terms, and charted.
Bow Beautiful Crochet Brooch by Agrarian Artisan
What Is Being Made
Bow Beautiful is a decorative crochet brooch or corsage designed by Agrarian Artisan. This wearable jewellery piece features a classic bow silhouette and measures approximately 11 cm wide by 9 cm deep (4¼ inches by 3½ inches). The brooch is constructed as one continuous crochet piece, making it an elegant accessory suitable for pinning to clothing, bags, or other fabric surfaces.
Construction Method and Design
The bow is worked in a continuous crochet technique without breaking the yarn between sections. The design begins with two loops that form the main body of the bow, followed by additional rows that create the bow tails. This seamless construction approach ensures a cohesive, professionally finished appearance.
Crochet Stitches and Techniques Used
Bow Beautiful employs a variety of fundamental crochet stitches to create shaping and dimension:
- Chain stitch (ch) — used to bridge across sections and move between the two loops of the bow
- Double crochet (dc) — forms the foundation and edge stitches, providing structure and definition
- Half treble (htr) — creates transitional height between double crochet and treble sections
- Treble (tr) — used extensively to build height and create the fuller, more dramatic sections of the bow loops
- Slip stitch (ss) — joins rounds to complete the circular sections
The stitch pattern uses strategic increases (working 2 trebles into single stitches) across the central section of each loop to create the characteristic curved, dimensional shape of a bow. The combination of shorter stitches at the edges and taller stitches in the middle produces a naturally curved, three-dimensional form.
Yarn and Materials
Bow Beautiful was originally designed using a firm cotton yarn in a DK (double knitting) or 4-ply weight. Cotton yarn provides structure, durability, and a refined finish suitable for jewellery-quality crochet. However, the pattern encourages experimentation with alternative yarns — simply adjust your hook size accordingly to achieve the desired fabric density and drape. The firm construction of the original design ensures the brooch holds its shape well when worn.
Skill Level
This project is rated as intermediate difficulty. While the stitches used are fundamental crochet techniques, the pattern requires familiarity with multiple stitch heights, working into specific stitches, and managing a continuous piece with directional changes. The shaping techniques and stitch increases demand attention to pattern instructions and basic crochet experience.
