Boxy Twist Stitch Jumper by Sian Brown

What is Being Made

The Boxy Twist Stitch Jumper is a women's knitted top designed by independent designer Sian Brown. This garment features a relaxed, boxy silhouette with finished bust measurements ranging from 96cm to 141cm (37¾ to 55¾ inches), accommodating sizes from 32 to 50 inches. The jumper includes long sleeves measuring 34cm (13½ inches) and a length to shoulder varying from 55cm to 64cm (21½ to 25¼ inches) depending on size. The design is suitable for intermediate-level knitters seeking a contemporary, structured knitwear piece.

Techniques Used

This knitting pattern employs several fundamental and intermediate techniques. The construction begins with a cast-on edge worked on smaller needles to create a neat, defined border. The pattern utilizes yarn forward increases (yf) to create decorative eyelet details within the stitch pattern. A key technique featured throughout is the pass over decrease, where the third stitch on the right-hand needle is passed over the first two stitches to create a distinctive twisted effect. The pattern is worked flat in pieces, with separate back and front sections that are subsequently seamed together. Ribbed edging created with knit and purl stitches provides structure and elasticity at the cast-on edge.

Stitches Used

  • Garter stitch: Worked over the first 3 rows using 3.75mm needles to create a textured, non-rolling edge
  • Stockinette stitch variations: Formed through alternating knit and purl rows in the main pattern sections
  • Twisted knit stitch (k1tbl): Knitting through the back loop to create a refined, twisted appearance in the vertical stitch lines
  • Yarn forward (yf): An increase technique that creates decorative eyelet holes within the pattern repeat
  • Pass over decrease: A left-leaning decrease where the third stitch passes over the first two stitches, creating the signature twist stitch element
  • Reverse stockinette stitch: Purl stitches on right-side rows create textured panels between the twisted stitch columns

Pattern Repeat and Stitch Structure

The Boxy Twist Stitch Jumper features a four-row pattern repeat that forms the primary design element. The pattern alternates between right-side rows and wrong-side rows, with the twist stitch decrease occurring on Row 3. The repeating unit consists of knit-through-back-loop stitches separated by reverse stockinette sections, creating vertical columns of twisted detail. This structured repeat allows the pattern to scale across different garment sizes while maintaining consistent visual impact and fabric drape.

Materials

The pattern specifies Debbie Bliss Amalfi yarn in shade 22, a DK weight yarn (light worsted). The yardage requirement ranges from 12 to 18 balls of 50g each, depending on the finished size selected. Two pairs of knitting needles are required: 3.75mm (US 5) needles for the ribbed cast-on edge and 4mm (US 6) needles for the main pattern sections. The pattern specifies a tension of 20 stitches and 30 rows to a 10cm (4-inch) square measured over the pattern on 4mm needles, which is essential for achieving the correct finished measurements.

Sizing and Fit

This pattern offers ten different size options to fit bust measurements from 82cm to 127cm (32 to 50 inches). The boxy construction provides generous positive ease, with finished bust measurements approximately 14–19cm (5½–7½ inches) larger than the intended bust fit size. This relaxed fit is characteristic of contemporary jumper design and allows for comfortable layering and movement.
