Cake with Slices Missing – Knitted Decorative Cake by Louisa Noble

What Is Being Made

This is a knitted decorative cake designed as a charming tea-time ornament or play piece. The finished cake measures 10 cm high with a 16 cm diameter, featuring a realistic chocolate cake appearance with visible slices already removed. The design captures the playful detail of a partially eaten dessert, making it an ideal companion piece to knitted cupcakes or other food-themed decorations.

Construction Method and Design

The cake is constructed using a straightforward three-piece assembly method, requiring only a single seam to join the components together at the end. This efficient construction approach makes the project accessible while maintaining visual appeal. The design incorporates structural elements including cardboard (such as that from a cereal box) and stuffing to create a dimensional, three-dimensional form that holds its shape effectively.

Knitting Techniques Used

This intermediate-level project employs fundamental knitting techniques suitable for crafters with some experience. The primary techniques include:

  • Increases: Multiple increase methods are used throughout the pattern, including knitting into the front and back of stitches (inc 1) to create shaping and expansion in the circular base and sides of the cake
  • Shaping: Strategic increases placed at regular intervals create the dimensional cake form, with increases distributed across rows to build a rounded, three-dimensional structure
  • Seaming: A single seam joins the main pieces together, requiring basic seaming skills
  • Embellishment: Seed beads (white or clear) are incorporated as decorative details, likely representing cake decorations or highlights

Stitches and Stitch Patterns

The pattern uses classic knitting stitches worked primarily in stockinette stitch (alternating knit and purl rows). Key stitch elements include:

  • Knit stitch (K): Forms the primary fabric structure
  • Purl stitch (P): Creates the reverse side of stockinette stitch on alternate rows
  • Increases (inc 1): Executed by knitting into the front and back of individual stitches, creating new stitches for shaping

The stitch count progression begins at 7 stitches and increases systematically across multiple rows, building from 14 stitches to 49 stitches and beyond, creating the expanding circular form of the cake's base and sides.

Materials and Tools Required

Yarn: The project uses DK (double knitting) weight yarn in three colors. You will need 50g of brown DK yarn for the main cake body, with small amounts of cream and red DK yarn for details such as frosting or filling layers.

Needles and Notions: A pair of size 11 (3mm) needles forms the primary knitting tool, with 5 double-pointed needles of the same size (3mm) used for working smaller sections or the three-dimensional elements. Additional materials include white or clear seed beads for embellishment, cardboard for structural support, and polyester stuffing to fill and shape the finished cake.

Difficulty Level

Rated as intermediate, this project is suitable for knitters who have mastered basic stitches and simple shaping but may still be developing their skills with more complex construction methods. The three-piece assembly and systematic increase sequences provide a satisfying challenge without overwhelming newer knitters.
