Product Description

This pattern is part of Yarn Crush Subscription box of June 2019 I wanted to include the same elements of my beginner patterns but add complexity by introducing some cable work. Campfire Trails Socks by Twin Stitches Designs

Project Overview

Campfire Trails is a beginner-friendly knitted sock pattern designed by Twin Stitches Designs. This downloadable PDF pattern introduces cable work techniques to knitters who are ready to progress beyond basic sock construction. The designer drew inspiration from nature, naming the pattern after the visual resemblance of the cables to branches along a trail, with seed stitch creating the appearance of a path between them.

What Is Being Made

This pattern produces a pair of knitted socks suitable for everyday wear. The design incorporates decorative cable elements on the sides of the sock combined with textured seed stitch sections, creating visual interest while maintaining accessibility for beginner-level knitters.

Sizing and Gauge

The pattern is available in three sizes:

  • Small: 56 stitches
  • Medium: 60 stitches
  • Large: 72 stitches

The recommended gauge is 34 stitches and 48 rows per 4 inches (10 cm). Achieving proper gauge is essential for obtaining the correct finished sock dimensions.

Knitting Techniques and Stitches

Campfire Trails employs several fundamental and intermediate knitting techniques suitable for advancing beginners:

  • Cable Work: Cable stitches are featured on the sides of the sock, creating the branching visual effect that inspired the pattern name
  • Seed Stitch: This textured stitch is worked between the cable sections, representing the trail element of the design
  • Long Tail Cast On: The pattern specifies the long tail cast on method for creating the initial stitches, though alternative cast-on methods are permitted
  • Heel Construction: The heel is worked in a structured manner, with the pattern notes indicating that heel stitches are worked on needle 1
  • Magic Loop Method: The sample was knit using the magic loop technique for working small circumference projects, though knitters may use any preferred method for sock construction

Materials and Yarn Requirements

The pattern requires 100 grams of fingering weight yarn, approximately 400 yards (365 meters), which is sufficient for one pair of socks.

The sample sock was knit using Black Cat Custom Yarn Luxury Sock, a premium fingering weight yarn composed of 70% superwash merino wool, 20% cashmere, and 10% nylon. This fiber blend provides durability, softness, and easy care characteristics ideal for sock knitting. The superwash treatment allows for machine washing, and the nylon content adds strength to high-wear areas.

Tools and Notions

To complete this project, knitters will need:

  • Needles: 2.25 mm / US 1 needles (or size required to obtain correct gauge)
  • Notions: One tapestry needle for weaving in ends and finishing

Pattern Design Philosophy

Campfire Trails builds upon the foundation of Twin Stitches Designs' beginner pattern Gravel Path by incorporating the same fundamental elements while introducing cable work complexity. This progression strategy makes the pattern ideal for knitters who have completed basic sock patterns and are ready to develop their cable knitting skills within a familiar sock construction framework.
