Check Me Out Sweater by Noelle Souza
What is Being Made
The Check Me Out Sweater is a chunky crochet pullover designed to evoke 1980s and 1990s aesthetic. This garment is written for nine sizes ranging from XS through 5XL, making it accessible to a wide range of body types. The sweater features a bold, textured design that combines front post and back post stitches to create visual interest and dimension. It is designed as a warm, statement piece suitable for pairing with contemporary styling such as high-rise mom jeans.
Difficulty Level and Sizing
This crochet pattern is rated as Advanced Beginner difficulty, making it suitable for crocheters with foundational skills who are ready to tackle more complex stitch techniques. The pattern is available in the following sizes: XS, S, M, L, XL, 2XL, 3XL, 4XL, and 5XL. The designer, Noelle Souza, is pictured wearing a size XL with a 44-inch bust measurement, providing a helpful reference point for fit.
Crochet Techniques and Stitches
The Check Me Out Sweater employs textured post stitches as its primary construction method. The pattern utilizes front post double crochet (FPDC) and back post double crochet (BPDC) stitches worked in alternating rows to create a ribbed, dimensional fabric. The stitch pattern repeats as follows: Rows 1-4 work FPDC across six stitches followed by BPDC across six stitches with a chain-2 turn; Rows 5-8 reverse this sequence, beginning with BPDC and finishing with FPDC, again with a chain-2 turn. This alternating post stitch technique builds texture and elasticity into the finished garment.
Materials and Yarn Weight
The Check Me Out Sweater is designed using bulky weight yarn, specifically Lion Brand Color Made Easy or similar Category 5 bulky yarn. Yardage requirements vary by size:
- XS: 988 yards (4 balls)
- S: 1,230 yards (5 balls)
- M and L: 1,472 yards (6 balls)
- XL: 1,714 yards (7 balls)
- 2XL: 1,956 yards (8 balls)
- 3XL: 2,198 yards (9 balls)
- 4XL and 5XL: 2,470 yards (10 balls)
The bulky weight yarn creates a quick, satisfying crochet experience while producing a warm, substantial finished garment.
Tools and Gauge
This pattern requires two crochet hook sizes: a US J (6.00 mm) hook and a US K (6.5 mm) hook. The larger US K hook is used for gauge measurement. The pattern is worked to a gauge of 12 stitches by 8 rows equaling 4 inches when measured over the post stitch pattern. Achieving proper gauge is essential for obtaining the correct finished measurements across all nine sizes.
