Product Description
Named after a forward thinking newspaper editor, suffragette, and constant knitter who lived in Vermont. This shawl combines stockinette with stripes and texture to keep the knitting interesting!
Errata The edging is worked as garter stitch. Knit the WS rows. (the charted directions show them as purl stitches - which is incorrect)
Yarn Notes The yardage requirements are 428 and 432 yards for your MC and CC. Please check your gauge! The yardage estimate includes an extra 5%. However, if your gauge is off you might need more than 1 skein for the CC. Also note that you shouldn't leave tails more than 4-6" when breaking the yarn for stripes. If substituting yarns please be sure you have enough to complete the shawl. Not all skeins of sock yarn will provide enough yardage.
Construction Notes A striped shawl worked from the top down with two increase points creating a shape somewhere between a crescent and a half-circle. The waves are created using multiple yo’s
Clarina Irene Striped Knit Shawl
What is Being Made
The Clarina Irene is a top-down knit shawl designed by BeckyinVT, named after a forward-thinking Vermont newspaper editor, suffragette, and knitter. This intermediate-level project creates a crescent to half-circle shaped shawl with a wingspan of 53 inches (134.5 cm) and back length of 24 inches (61 cm). The finished shawl combines stockinette stitch with striped colorwork and textured wave details to create visual interest throughout the knitting process.
Construction and Techniques
The Clarina Irene employs a top-down construction method with two strategic increase points that shape the shawl into its distinctive crescent-to-half-circle silhouette. The shawl features a sophisticated wave texture created through multiple yarn overs that are intentionally dropped on the following row, adding dimensional interest to the fabric. The color work consists of stripes worked in two coordinating colors. An applied edging is knit directly onto the finished shawl body, eliminating the need for a tightly bound-off edge and creating a refined, professional finish.
Stitches Used
- Stockinette stitch as the primary stitch base
- Yarn overs (yo) for creating the wave texture details
- Increases at two designated points to shape the shawl
- Applied edging worked using double-pointed needles
Yarn and Materials
This project uses Lorna's Laces Shepherd Sock yarn, a high-quality blend of 80% wool and 20% nylon. The yarn weight is 4-ply with a yardage of 435 yards per 100 grams. The pattern requires two skeins—one in the main color (MC) Ashburn and one in the contrasting color (CC) Monkeyshines. The main color requires 418 yards and the contrasting color requires 432 yards.
Needles and Notions
- US 5/3.75 mm circular needle, 32 inches long, for the main shawl body
- Spare double-pointed needles (DPN) in the same size for working the applied edging
- Two stitch markers for tracking the increase points
- Tapestry needle for weaving in yarn ends
Gauge
The pattern is worked at a gauge of 25 stitches and 37 rows per 4-inch (10 cm) square in stockinette stitch. Achieving the correct gauge is essential for obtaining the specified finished measurements.
Difficulty Level
This shawl is rated as an intermediate-level project, making it suitable for knitters with some experience beyond basic techniques. The combination of top-down shaping, color changes, and the unique wave texture technique created through yarn overs and drops requires solid foundational skills and comfort with reading pattern instructions.
