Product Description
This classic winter hat pattern from Lily B's has been created with cooler weather in mind. You can wear this hat with the brim rolled up like a classic winter hat, or with the brim unrolled as a more trendy slouchy hat. It's soft, squishy and has incredible stretch.
I designed this pattern using Patons Canadiana because it's one of those yarns that just 'feels good' in my hands and it's convenient for you as it can be found at most big name craft supplies stores.
However, if you prefer working with a different yarn, any comparable yarn would work, as well.

Classic Winter Hat by Catherine Anfield
What Is Being Made
The Classic Winter Hat is a versatile knitted beanie designed by Catherine Anfield of Lily B's. This downloadable PDF pattern offers multiple sizing options to accommodate different ages, from newborns through to larger head sizes. The hat features a folded brim design that can be worn in two distinct styles: as a fitted hat with the brim folded up, or as a slouchy hat for a more relaxed appearance. The design combines practical warmth with styling flexibility, making it suitable for various occasions and preferences.
Knitting Techniques Used
This pattern requires knitters to work in the round, which is a fundamental technique for creating seamless, tubular garments. The hat is constructed using circular needles or double-pointed needles to maintain continuous rounds without seaming. The pattern includes shaping techniques necessary to create the crown of the hat, tapering the stitches as you progress toward the top. The folded brim construction adds an extra layer of fabric at the base, providing both insulation and the flexibility to fold or leave unfolded depending on the desired finished look.
Stitches and Stitch Patterns
While the complete stitch-by-stitch details are contained within the full pattern PDF, the Classic Winter Hat utilizes fundamental knitting stitches appropriate for a worsted-weight yarn project. The construction relies on basic knit and purl stitches to create the fabric structure. The pattern incorporates decreases in the crown shaping to gradually reduce the number of stitches and form the top of the hat. These decreases are typically worked evenly across rounds to maintain a symmetrical, professional finish.
Materials: Yarn and Needles
This pattern is designed for worsted-weight yarn, a medium-weight yarn that knits up quickly and provides excellent warmth and durability for a winter hat. Worsted-weight yarn is ideal for beginners and intermediate knitters as it is forgiving and easy to work with. The pattern requires circular needles or a set of double-pointed needles appropriate for the yarn weight being used. The specific yardage requirements and needle sizes are detailed within the downloadable PDF pattern.
Sizing Options
The Classic Winter Hat pattern includes multiple size options to fit different ages and head circumferences:
- Newborn size: Fits 12" – 13" head circumference, measuring 5" tall with the brim folded up or 6.5" as a slouchy style
- 0-3 months size: Fits 13" – 14" head circumference, measuring 5.5" tall with the brim folded up or 7" as a slouchy style
- Sitter size: Fits 14" – 16" head circumference, with proportional height adjustments
This range of sizes makes the pattern suitable for gifting to babies and young children, or for creating hats for family members with different head sizes.
Skill Level and Pattern Format
The Classic Winter Hat pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty, requiring knitters to have experience working in the round before beginning this project. The pattern is provided as a downloadable PDF, making it convenient to access on digital devices or print for reference while knitting. The PDF format allows crafters to keep the pattern instructions readily available at their workspace.
