COLOUR BLOCK TANK

What’s better than a comfy cotton tank top? The answer is NADA. Breezy, light and longer to so you can rock it with tights, this tank is perfect to get your tan on (with sunscreen – duh!). This tank top is worked in the round on circular needles and broken down into 4 parts. The body, front straps (A & B), and then the racer back as the final piece named part C. You will work in the round until the armpits, break off to knit the straps individually and finally knit the back panel separately. Using the three needle bind off, you will join the straps to the back. Get excited cause’ your #colourblocktank journey is about to start!

Colour Block Tank by Knitatude - Chantal

What is Being Made

The Colour Block Tank is a knitted cotton sleeveless top designed for warm-weather wear. This garment features a longer length suitable for pairing with tights and incorporates color blocking through the use of two distinct yarn colors. The tank top is constructed in four separate sections: the body, two front straps (labeled A and B), and a racer back component (labeled C), which are then assembled together to create the finished piece.

Construction Method and Techniques

This tank top is worked in the round using circular needles, which creates a seamless construction ideal for a comfortable, body-hugging fit. The garment is broken down into distinct sections that are knitted separately and then joined together. The pattern employs a three-needle bind-off technique to secure the final seams, which is a professional finishing method that creates a strong, elastic edge. The racer back design adds both style and functionality to the garment.

Stitches Used

The primary stitch used throughout this project is Stockinette stitch, which creates a smooth, classic knit fabric with a flat appearance on the front and textured reverse on the back. This fundamental stitch is ideal for showcasing color blocking and provides an elegant drape suitable for a tank top.

Yarn and Materials

  • Yarn: Two skeins each of Color A and Color B, using We Are Knitters "Pima Cotton" or another lightly worsted weight yarn (category 3). Each skein contains approximately 300m/328yds to 325m/355yds, totaling approximately 600–650 meters of yarn.
  • Needles: Size US 8/5 mm circular needles measuring 20"/50 cm long for working in the round, plus one Size US 8/5 mm double-pointed needle (DPN) for the three-needle bind-off technique.
  • Gauge: 17 stitches by 24 rows over 4 inches when worked in Stockinette stitch.

Finished Dimensions

The completed tank top measures approximately 24"/61 cm in length and 34"/86 cm in width, creating a comfortable, relaxed fit suitable for layering or wearing as a standalone piece during warm weather.

Skill Level

While listed as intermediate difficulty, this project is accessible to knitters with foundational skills, particularly those comfortable working in the round with circular needles and familiar with the three-needle bind-off technique. The use of straightforward Stockinette stitch keeps the pattern approachable for those building their knitting repertoire.
