Product Description
Slip your feet into a pair of comfy socks to keep your tootsies warm. These shaped socks are made with a slight elastic stitch pattern, and linked stitches for the sole. They are worked from the toe-up, so you can tailor-make them to fit your feet as you work. Most of the sock is worked in one piece. The heel is worked into the heel opening and a short seam needs sewing closed.
A ball of 3-1/2 oz (100g) yarn is enough to make one pair of socks. However, if you are making a larger or longer version of the sock, you might need more yarn.
The pattern has two sizes: Small – Shoe size US 6-7.5 (UK 4-5.5 / EU 36-38); Foot Length – About 9” – 9½“ Large – Shoe size US 8-9.5 (UK 6-7.5 / EU 38-40) Foot Length – About 9½” – 10”
There is one pattern, and the size is determined by the hook used.
Comfy Ankle Socks by Wendi Cusins
What is Being Made
The Comfy Ankle Socks are a pair of shaped, slip-on socks designed to fit average women's feet. This crochet pattern, designated as Wendi's Workbasket Pattern Number WC037, offers two size options: Small (US shoe size 6-7.5 with approximately 9" to 9½" foot length) and Large (US shoe size 8-9.5 with approximately 9½" to 10" foot length). The socks are worked primarily in one continuous piece from the toe upward, with the heel constructed separately and added afterward. This toe-up construction method allows crafters to customize the fit and length to match their individual foot measurements.
Crochet Techniques and Construction Methods
These socks employ several specialized crochet techniques to achieve both comfort and structure. The primary body of each sock features an elastic stitch pattern that provides gentle compression and flexibility for a snug, comfortable fit. The sole of the sock is worked using linked stitches, which create a durable, textured base designed to withstand wear and provide traction. The toe-up construction method is a key technique used throughout this pattern, allowing the crafter to begin at the toe and work progressively toward the cuff, making it possible to try on the sock during the crafting process and adjust the length as needed. The heel is worked separately in a subsequent step and then integrated into the completed sock structure.
Stitches Used
While the pattern description emphasizes the elastic stitch pattern for the main body and linked stitches for the sole, specific stitch abbreviations and detailed stitch instructions are contained within the complete pattern document. The combination of these stitches creates a sock with both stretch and durability, balancing comfort with structural integrity.
Materials Required
Yarn: Light weight (DK) yarn is used for this project. Approximately 3½ ounces (100 grams) or 272–292 yards (250–266 meters) of main color yarn is needed for the pair. Suggested yarn options include Universal Yarn Bamboo Pop™, Patons® Grace™, and Premier Cotton Fair® (note that Premier Cotton Fair® is classified as fine weight yarn, though gauge can be achieved for the Small size). Crafters making larger or longer socks should plan for additional yardage beyond the stated amount.
Tools and Notions: A crochet hook appropriate for DK-weight yarn, stitch markers for tracking pattern repeats and shaping, and a yarn needle for weaving in ends are required to complete this project.
Difficulty Level
This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty, making it suitable for crocheters who have mastered basic stitches and are ready to tackle more complex shaping techniques, such as toe-up construction and heel integration.
