Product Description
Die schöne Lau is a long, narrow crescent shawl that starts with a garter-tab cast-on at the centre of the top edge, then increases at the beginning and end of each row. Textured stripes reminiscent of ripples on the water interrupt the stocking stitch background of the shawl body. The lace border is knit on sideways at the end.
Skills required: Knitting and purling, working lace stitches (right- and left-leaning single decreases, yarn overs, centred double decreases and double increases), and working cables over 4 stitches. The pattern of the lace border is worked on both sides of the work. Full written instructions as well as an additional chart for the leaf lace are included.
Yarn requirements: The sample shawl was worked in two colours of fingering-weight yarn. Most test knitters were able to complete the project with 100 g of each colour, but if your gauge is slightly looser than recommended, you should allow for approximately 425 m (465 yards) of each colour.
Die schöne Lau Shawl
Design Overview
Die schöne Lau is a knitted shawl design by independent designer Sabine Kastner, inspired by the German legend of a beautiful mermaid said to inhabit the Blautopf, a karst spring in Southern Germany renowned for its distinctive blue water. The shawl captures the narrative of Lau, a mermaid who overcame inexplicable sadness through human connection and friendship, eventually earning blessings of luck and prosperity.
Craft and Construction
This design is created using the knitting technique, making it an excellent project for knitters with intermediate skill level. The shawl construction allows for creative interpretation and personalization through yarn selection, as demonstrated in the sample shown in the colorway Blue Fish using Jilly by Dreamin Color yarn.
Yarn and Materials
Die schöne Lau is designed for 4-ply weight yarn, a versatile yarn weight that provides excellent stitch definition and drape suitable for shawl projects. The sample photographed features Merino Single by Sisi Spinnerei in the Smoke on the Water colorway, demonstrating how natural fiber choices enhance the finished piece. Knitters can select their preferred yarn and needles appropriate for 4-ply weight construction.
Project Format
This design is available as a downloadable PDF pattern, providing convenient access to detailed instructions for crafting the shawl at home.
