Product Description
Dimday to Daybreak is a small collection consisting of 2 hats and a cowl. Inspired by the muted colours and the starlight seen at dusk, dawn and during the night. A time where traditionally we think of it as being 'black' but in reality there is colour but in soft muted shades. This is the pattern for Shades of Night, the third in the collection.
This is a cowl made from a motif pattern that is repeated in the top of both the hats in the collection. It is available in one size only but because it is made from motifs the size is easy to modify. This cowl uses the colours from the hats with the addition of a couple of new ones. Shades of Night is the perfect stash-buster as each motif takes very little yarn to complete allowing you to finish up some of the smallest pieces from your stash.

Dimday to Daybreak - Shades of Night Cowl
What is Being Made
Dimday to Daybreak - Shades of Night is a crocheted motif cowl designed by Sarahjanedesigns. This intermediate-level project creates a cowl that captures the visual progression and nuances of nighttime through a carefully coordinated color palette. The finished cowl measures 27 inches in circumference and 12 inches in width, making it a versatile neckwear piece suitable for layering and seasonal wear.
Crochet Techniques and Construction
This cowl is constructed using motif-based crochet techniques, which involve creating individual design elements that are worked together to form the complete garment. The motif approach allows for creative color work and visual interest throughout the piece. The pattern is written in US crochet terminology and includes detailed stitch counts at row endings where stitch numbers change, helping crafters maintain proper shaping and structure.
Stitches Used
The Dimday to Daybreak cowl utilizes a variety of fundamental crochet stitches to create texture and structure:
- Chain stitch - used for foundation and construction
- Single crochet - provides a tight, dense fabric
- Half double crochet - creates medium-weight fabric and is used for increases (hdc2tog for decreasing)
- Double crochet - adds height and drape to sections
- Slip stitch - joins rounds and creates seamless transitions
Materials and Yarn Requirements
This cowl pattern requires 440 yards (400 meters) of light worsted weight yarn in total. The yarn is divided among multiple colors to achieve the shades of night color palette that gives this design its visual character. Crafters will need an appropriate crochet hook for light worsted weight yarn and should have basic crochet skills at the intermediate level to successfully complete this project.
Pattern Details
The pattern includes comprehensive abbreviations and notes to guide crafters through the construction process. Designers are advised to read through the entire pattern before beginning to ensure they have all necessary materials and possess the required skills. The round-by-round construction is clearly marked with rnd notations, and the pattern uses standard abbreviations including rep for repeat, sk for skip, sp for space, and st/sts for stitch or stitches.
