Product Description
Dolores was inspired by Dolores Umbridge from the Harry Potter books. Even though Dolores Umbridge is a tea drinking evil character she wear's pink fluffy cardi's and love kittens :-)
Dolores is a lovely light crochet cardigan with graduated lace effect down the body and sleeves.
Please note - the drape and garment blocking growth may alter with a different yarn. It is made using block motifs – solid square, lace square and partial square. The partial square is made by missing one or more sides on the last round of the motif to give an open effect at the edges.
Sizes The pattern is written in 2 sizes – small/medium for up to 38 inch chest and large for up to 48 inch chest.
The Dolores cardi was featured as a pattern in Inside Crochet magazine December 2013.
Dolores Cardigan by Amanda Perkins
Garment Overview
The Dolores Cardigan is a sophisticated light crochet cardigan featuring a graduated lace effect that flows elegantly down the body and sleeves. This advanced-level crochet design combines solid and lace block motifs to create visual interest and movement throughout the piece. The cardigan is available in two sizes: small/medium (up to 38 inch chest) and large (up to 48 inch chest).
Construction Techniques
The Dolores Cardigan is constructed using block motifs as the primary building method. The design incorporates three types of motif blocks:
- Solid square motifs – Dense blocks that provide structure and weight to the garment
- Lace square motifs – Open-work blocks that create the graduated lace effect
- Partial square motifs – Incomplete blocks created by omitting one or more sides on the final round, producing open edges that enhance the flowing aesthetic
This modular approach allows the designer to strategically place motifs to achieve the graduated lace transition from solid areas to increasingly open sections down the body and sleeves. The technique requires careful planning and execution, making this an advanced level project.
Stitches and Crochet Techniques
The pattern employs fundamental crochet stitches to construct the block motifs:
- Chain stitch (ch) – Used for foundation chains and spacing within motifs
- Single crochet (sc) – Provides tight, dense fabric in solid motif areas
- Half treble (htr) – Creates medium-height stitches for lace motif construction
- Double crochet (dc) – Taller stitches used throughout the lace blocks for open-work effects
- Slip stitch (sl st) – Joins rounds and motifs together seamlessly
The pattern is provided with both UK and US crochet terminology, with US terms marked in red and UK terms in black for international accessibility.
Yarn and Materials
The Dolores Cardigan is designed to be worked in 4 ply alpaca yarn or similar lightweight alpaca blends with equivalent meterage. The yarn specifications are:
- Yarn weight: 4 ply (fingering weight)
- Recommended fiber: Drops Alpaca or similar alpaca yarn
- Yardage per 100 grams: 400 meters
- Small/medium size: 500 grams Pink, 50 grams Lilac
- Large size: 600 grams Pink, 50 grams Lilac
The pattern notes that yarn choice significantly impacts the finished garment, as drape and garment blocking growth may alter with a different yarn. Substituting yarns should be done with consideration for fiber content, weight, and meterage to maintain the intended aesthetic.
Tools Required
The project requires crochet hooks in two sizes: 3mm and 3.5mm (or appropriate sizes to achieve proper tension). Having both sizes available allows for tension adjustments and creates variation in stitch definition between solid and lace motifs if desired.
Design Features
The two-color colorway of Pink and Lilac creates visual contrast and definition between the motif blocks. The graduated lace effect—transitioning from more solid construction to increasingly open lace—creates a sophisticated drape that becomes lighter and more flowing toward the hem and cuff areas. This design approach is both aesthetically pleasing and functionally practical for a cardigan intended as a layering piece.
