Product Description
I wanted to have a go at being a little more eco-friendly in these times of climate crisis, so I looked into making these lovely cheerful reusable shower puffs. They are made from cotton, which is not amazingly great for the planet as it uses so much water, but I still believe that they are gentler on the environment than the plastic gloves I used to use to exfoliate with. This pattern takes inspiration from a few I looked at online, with my own adaptations too.
Eloelai Happy Days Shower Puff
What is Being Made
The Eloelai Happy Days Shower Puff is a reusable, eco-conscious crocheted exfoliating accessory designed for use in the shower. This beginner-friendly project creates a cheerful, functional bath essential that serves as a sustainable alternative to single-use plastic exfoliating gloves. The finished puff is one size fits all, making it universally wearable and practical for daily bathing routines.
Craft and Design Philosophy
Designer Eloelai created this pattern with environmental consciousness in mind, seeking to reduce reliance on plastic bath products. While cotton production does require significant water resources, these reusable shower puffs represent a gentler environmental choice compared to disposable plastic exfoliating tools. The pattern draws inspiration from existing designs found online, with Eloelai's own thoughtful adaptations woven throughout.
Crochet Techniques Used
This project employs fundamental crochet techniques suitable for beginners. The construction begins by creating a foundation ring using a chain and slip stitch join, establishing the base structure. From this ring, the crafter extends a long chain for the hanging loop, which is then joined back to the original ring. The body of the puff is built outward in rounds using increasing stitches to create the three-dimensional, textured form needed for effective exfoliation.
Stitches Used
- Chain (ch) — the foundational stitch used to create the initial ring and hanging loop
- Slip stitch (ss) — used to join chains and complete rounds
- Double crochet (dc) — the primary stitch for building the puff body, worked in multiples to create dense texture
- Treble crochet (tr) — used to add height and variation to the stitch pattern
- Double treble (dtr) — employed for additional texture and dimension
Materials and Tools
Yarn: One ball of Aran weight cotton yarn. The pattern specifically references Scheepjes Cahlista as the yarn used by the designer, though any Aran weight cotton will work for this project. Cotton is chosen for its absorbency and durability in a wet shower environment.
Hook: A 4 mm crochet hook is required to work with the Aran weight yarn at the appropriate gauge.
Gauge: Tension is not critical for this pattern, making it forgiving for beginners and allowing for creative variations without compromising the finished puff's functionality.
Skill Level
Rated as a beginner project, the Eloelai Happy Days Shower Puff requires only basic crochet knowledge. The straightforward construction of working in rounds and increasing stitches makes it an ideal first project for those learning crochet fundamentals.
