Enia Cardigan in Berroco Tiramisu – Pattern Summary

The Enia Cardigan is a knitted colorblock cardigan designed by the Berroco Design Team and worked in Berroco Tiramisu yarn. This intermediate-level pattern is available as a downloadable PDF and offers a relaxed, wearable silhouette with a striking striped yoke and garter stitch texture throughout. It is sized to fit a wide range of bust measurements, from 37 to 70 inches (94–178 cm) closed, with a recommended positive ease of approximately 4–6 inches (10–15 cm), making it a generously comfortable layering piece.

What Is Being Made

The Enia Cardigan is a long-sleeved, open-front cardigan featuring a colorblock stripe design across the upper body and sleeves. It has a collar and a lower band worked as finishing elements after the main body is complete. The finished length ranges from approximately 19½ to 23 inches (49.5–58.5 cm) including the lower band, depending on the size chosen. The sample shown in the pattern is knitted in size 46 inches / 117 cm.

Construction Technique

One of the most distinctive features of the Enia Cardigan is its sideways construction. Rather than being worked from the bottom hem upward in the conventional manner, the upper section of the garment is worked in one piece sideways, from the right cuff to the left cuff. This seamless, top-down-adjacent approach means that the sleeve and body shaping are integrated into a single continuous piece of knitting, reducing seaming and giving the colorblock stripes a natural horizontal flow across the body.

Once the upper section is complete, the collar is picked up and worked, and then the lower band is picked up and worked downward. This sequence of picking up and working additional sections is a hallmark of thoughtfully engineered knitwear construction, allowing the knitter to build the garment in logical stages while maintaining a clean, polished finish at every edge.

Stitches Used

The entire garment is worked in Garter Stitch — one of the most fundamental and satisfying stitches in knitting. Garter stitch is produced by knitting every row when working flat (back and forth), creating a fabric with horizontal ridges on both sides. It is naturally stretchy, lies flat without curling, and has a pleasingly rustic, textural quality that suits the relaxed aesthetic of the Enia Cardigan beautifully.

  • Garter Stitch (Garter St): The sole stitch pattern used throughout the entire garment, including the sleeves, body, collar, and lower band.
  • M1L (Make 1 Left): A left-leaning increase stitch used during sleeve and body shaping, referenced in the pattern's increase rows.
  • Inc Row: Structured increase rows are used to shape the sleeves and body as the knitting progresses sideways from cuff to cuff.

Because garter stitch has a different row-to-stitch ratio than stockinette, the gauge is measured specifically in garter stitch: 18 stitches and 36 rows = 4 inches / 10 cm. Knitters are strongly encouraged to swatch and block their gauge swatch before beginning, as the gauge is measured after blocking.

Colorwork and Stripe Design

While the Enia Cardigan does not use complex colorwork techniques such as stranded knitting or intarsia, it achieves its bold visual impact through simple stripe sequences worked by changing yarn colors at designated intervals. Three colors are used:

  • Main Color (MC): Berroco Tiramisu in #9209 Mascarpone — the primary color used throughout the body and sleeves.
  • Contrast Color 1 (CC1): Berroco Tiramisu in #9227 Pizzelle — used for an 8-row stripe sequence in the colorblock section.
  • Contrast Color 2 (CC2): Berroco Tiramisu in #9236 Tartufo — used for an 8-row stripe sequence, creating a bold accent
